I sold a book online and paid for shipping with Paypal (media mail, like $5 or $6, I can't remember). Took it to the post office but it turns out I underestimated the weight. I thought it was 7 lbs but the true weight was 7 lbs, 7 oz.

I asked him how much extra money I owed them. He said he didn't know and couldn't accept my package or do anything for me if I didn't know how much the shipping that I'd paid for had cost. I told him I'd pay the difference or whatever -- an extra dollar, two, three -- but apparently that was impossible. He just kind of stood there and stared at me, about 30 seconds passed and he didn't seem to care.

Odds are the rate is the same and I don't owe them a single cent but now I'll have to wait until Monday to find out.

avec did you get any good tips this holiday season?

What are the "official" rules about doing this and what are the real rules/expectations that most people actually follow about tipping?

No offense to avec, but tipping your mailman in 2013/4 is ridiculous. Some guy drives up to my mailbox around 11 am. If I get a package, a different USPS worker comes to my door mid-afternoon. If it doesn't require a signature, they don't even knock. That's okay, just leave it on my doorstep which I seldom use since I have an attached garage, even if it's raining out and I won't find it until the box is soaked.

And if I tip one or both of them, what about FedEx and/or UPS folks? And the eastern European lady who works for Office Depot who had to deliver a heavy chair to me in last week's weather? Felt like I should invite her in for hot chocolate. But I'm sure she was too busy busting her ass for the man to do anything but scurry back to her truck.

My mailman first drops the mail now at like 7:30 at night after I've gotten home so fuck if I'm going back outside to get it. And FedEx can go to hell and out of business for all I care. Package stealing goat fuckers.

You say no offence yancy. why would i be? Of the 384 houses i regularly deliver to, maybe 15 reached out this season. i expect more next year as i have only been on the route 5 months. but i still give the same service to those that dont give, and dont appreciate them any lesd. and i dont expect a tip either. i enjoy the relationships i have already made on my route so far. thats what counts.

Coyote what do you think of the people that have a giant fish as their mailbox instead of just a traditional box?

I had a horrible experience with UPS recently. Anything that's left on my porch gets stolen, so I deliver most shit to my parents house. Well I also order my insulin line and have it shipped to a UPS store really close to my office for $5 more. Well they messed up and delivered it to my house and no surprise my insulin got stolen. I have a stop or whatever on anything from UPS being delivered to my house + it was supposed to be delivered to the store. I call the 800# and they blame the webstore for it being stolen and hung up on me when I asked for a manager. Luckily the third party overnighted me the insulin again at no cost, but holy fucking shit I needed that insulin within at least 3 days. Fuck UPS.

Admittedly neither USPS nor Royal Mail-related but didn't really think the board was crying out for a non-US/UK postal system thread

Today, they refused to let me ship a shoebox-sized-box of VHS tapes by media mail because they're not "educational material." They said this was a new rule but I'm looking all over the Internet and there's nothing official posted anywhere except rumors on message boards posted years ago.

So instead of paying $4 or something like that it cost me $15.

Most offices had carriers volunteer to deliver parcels on that day, in exchange for a day off of our choosing in the future. Otherwise we would have never kept up with the insane volume plus epidemic understaffing this season.
