Lot of stroke-inducing idiocy posted on the somb in recent times, but it'd be a shame if it all disappeared. A lot of work went into those EOY threads.

Was thinking about the posters I'd miss, and I don't think there are any that aren't on here, save for maybe badger (accessible via twitter), and stphone (who was only a rare contributor these days anyway). Guess I didn't mind the occasional zany Useless Rocker post.

Re: JDFF
Are Chrono, Liffey, Caley and Richard about on here? Always enjoyed hearing their thoughts. It would be nice to have some of the threads archived, especially the lists with blurbs.
As stated, I have most of the Operator Please thread (it always cuts it off a few pages from the end when you download it for some reason) the the 2012 Singles, I had planned to back up a few more but never got round to it.

Chrono's here. You can find Liffey on At Ease, and probably also on some tranny facsimile of okcupid. I dunno about the other two.

Latest news:
- Huge server crash
- Message board and review database destroyed
- Board will be back but in a much older form - the nearest usable backup is from 2009, so I'm guessing threads from back then will be intact

Re: JDFF
There is something really unsettling about the way all those posts and all that information can just disappear for good in an instant. Whatever anyone says, there was a lot of stuff worth keeping in there - all the effort that went into those EOY blurbs gone forever. Makes you realise what a waste of time it all is - how many hours of our lives have been spent on those posts?
You'd think these days people would have ways to bring the information back or some kind of automatic backup system. How much stuff must have been lost from the internet? Barely anything pre-1998 survives I'm guessing. As someone who studied history this is so frustrating: now more than ever there is no excuse for not leaving a complete record.

I have nothing that's not saved here:

There are some Spotify playlists out there of more recent singles eoy lists made by Mitchell and/or Rob Gordon, if you want em.

Comes largely from having a message board ever-more divorced from the site hosting it. The people who could have done this had no strong incentive.

Re: JDFF
True, true. Second time this has happened in my life actually - a board called Smarkschoice disappeared completely after the owners didn't pay the bills, and a ton of awesome stuff was lost there as well. Pretty ironic that the only things that seem to survive are terrible Invision boards with no posts in the last ten years.
Guess the moral is to back the stuff up yourself.
As I said, the board will be back so I assume Sid will still be around on there. Presumably everyone who registered pre-2009m will still have there accounts too? I'm not sure how these things work.

Love Sid. Doubt he'll post here. He despised members-only Ninja Turtles Fan Forum and its antics; doubt he'll see our doings here as anything different from that.

Thinking about how board content could disappear forever led me to go re-memorize the John Wayne Listening to Vampire Weekend thread, just in case

Looking back on it, if that board is indeed dead, I am very happy about my last action as a poster which was to auto embed the "Who Let the Dogs Out" YouTube in the Dogs Wearing Sunglasses thread.

I figured that the weight of this loss would set in as I gradually remembered what threads I could no longer occasionally reread. One of which is Campaigner's Neil Young discography overview thread. So yeah. This is just going to seem like a bigger bummer all the time. Somebody archive members-only Ninja Turtles Fan Forum, plz.

i am always surprised by how many times people mention "re-reading" ancient threads. i really don't want to revisit most of that stuff and am glad it's gone. EOY threads excepted, i guess.

I usually don't re-read threads aside from that one with Kot and Dero and "farts on his shit." That one kills me everytime.

If there's some salvage that's something, I think we will need to get on saving shit when we get the chance.
Hopefully the vast majority of good stuff is pre 2009.
Real shame about the end of year lists, I certainly have the old lists, not the blurbs.
