Re: Running
I signed up about 4 years ago to run that Chicago Lakefront 50k but got talked out of it that night / early morning by a girl I met at a bar earlier in the night who stayed over.

Re: Running
Ended up not totally embarrassing myself. Took a very distant second despite not meeting my own expectations with a respectable 19:05. I likely lucked out from lack of competition (we seem to be one of the few squadrons who never really work on Friday, so I'm sure some solid runners couldn't make it out). Guy who was always going to win won it with a 16:20 and he didn't even look like he was going full speed

Re: Running
Running is a really cool thing to me in theory. I love the idea of listening to some relaxing tunes while running around bare chested on a cool autumn afternoon. But when I actually lace up and try it I get a stomach stitch within .5 mile and it fucking sucks.
I'm definitely in the worst shape of my life and it is probably only going to get worse unless I change something. However, I still feel like I am probably more 'fit' than a lot of American men my age, which really doesn't mean shit.

Re: Running
Half a mile is fine as a start. Just do it three or four times a week and bump it up to a full mile in like a month.
But if I could ride out on youthful metabolism for another couple of years I sure as fuck would sit on my ass too.

go slower for that half mile, and don't eat anything for at least an hour before you go run.

Re: Running
I used to hate running, but once it has become part of your routine, it becomes the best thing. And for guys like me (or I'm assuming "us," WP) with addictive personalities it can be a much healthier alternative to other hobbies. Though it will probably take my knees in the long term, it's helped me avoid the inevitable thirtysomething chubbification, and just generally kept me feeling great.

Re: Running
In college I was into biking somewhat long distances throughout all four seasons. I got a lot of enjoyment out of the lakefront, certainly, although I don't know how "in shape" it kept me.
Since then I've gotten into more of a workout routine. That includes running a mile on a treadmill three days a week, which has definitely become less unbearable over time. No cramps, anyway. I do not plan on getting more serious about running. Maybe I'll go up to two miles before the decade is over.
Anyways...consistency is everything!

I think I could easily do this for twenty more years and I still feel a lot better for exercising regularly.

Had a pretty good run today, I don't know if the cool temperatures made the difference or what because I've been feeling really shitty lately.

Disagree.
It's as good a way to keep yourself from dying as any though.

Re: Running
I used to bike a lot. My ex-girlfriend's dad was super into it and I used to bike 60 miles a day with him and his friends during the summer. Unfortunately when I had that inflammation in my nut sack I had to give it up for a while and then I never got back on the saddle.Paves wrote:In college I was into biking somewhat long distances throughout all four seasons. Before this year began I was actually thinking that three days a week would be a perfect way to keep myself somewhat fit and regulate my sleeping schedule as well. Good to hear that it works for you, man!

Re: Running
guys the new world record in the marathon is sub 2:03:00. his average mile is in the 4:41-4:42 range.
those are quarter miles run in 70 seconds and change. 105 of them.
in college i got down to a 4:21 mile. it blows my mind how fast this is for so long. most *runners* could not keep up if they chose only to race him for the last quarter mile.

He must lock his hips & legs into some kind of muscle memory perpetual motion machine. I dunno how you run that fast for that long without rest, food, etc.

Re: Running
Sweet Jesus that is absolutely insane.
On another note, I just managed a 1.5 this morning in 7:59 for my biannual fitness test. Super jazzed to break the 8 minute mark.
The super fast dude came in at 7:15. We were talking bout our glory days on a post race jog. He once did a 4:11 mile. I thought it was braggable that I was employed as an antagonist/enforcer for a legitimately kickass high school CC team, annoying and occasionally body checking fast dudes from rival teams.

I ran outside for the first time in a few months. I'm pretty out of shape but it felt glorious to be off the treadmill and running outside in shorts

I'm in Salt Lake City and got 2.5 miles in yesterday. I'm in terrible shape right now but, like Ned & Petey said, it was awesome to be outside.

Enjoyed running the Chase Corporate Challenge tonight, crushing beers with some co-workers afterwards and then walking to the train listening to Mercury Rev at night.

Buddy of mine finished 95th in Boston with a 2:31. Bonkers. Dude had a couple nagging injuries too... Utterly insane.ClosetOfExhaustion wrote:guys the new world record in the marathon is sub 2:03:00. his average mile is in the 4:41-4:42 range.

It's do or die time for me. I'll probably never have another chance to be young(ish) and not injured. I'm gonna try for one decent marathon time. Just snagged a pair of asics kayanos for 55 bucks so it's a sign. Time to destroy these kicks racking up marathon miles.

Went for a run this morning and the park I ran past had a massive high school girls lacrosse tournament taking place. The tournament was sponsored by BJ Sports.
