    Vicious Psychedelic Guitar Insanity

Post by zappo on Fri Feb 15, 2013 2:53 pm

One of my favorite things to do is to listen to bone-crushingly heavy psychedelic music. My favorite part about listening to that stuff is enjoying the most brutal of brutal guitar freakouts. I'd like to listen to, talk about, and share that kind of music with anybody who'd care to join in on the fun.

No half-assery, though. Not even 3/4-assery will do. Only the most mind-flaying, pile-driving, pus-spitting stuff will do. I got nothing against the Elevators or the Dead, but (the vast, overwhelming majority of) that shit won't cut it.

The guitar solo that starts at about 20:25 into this excerpt from the Seven That Spells/Kawabata Makoto record The Men from Dystopia is the sort of thing that this thread wants.

Ry Cooder used to be in this band. Their LP is just okay, and it doesn't even feature this amazing song. I found it on a hit-or-miss compilation called Beyond the Calico Wall, back in the spring of 2009. I guess that this isn't quite as "heavy" a song as I had in mind, but it definitely sounds like these bros were dropping way too much acid and eating way too many mushrooms.

Nothing's too obvious, by the way. I'm pretty sure that everybody here who'd care to hear this song already has, but it still deserves a dedicated post in the "Vicious Psychedelic Guitar Insanity" thread.

Still feel Randy Bachman rocked as hard as anyone has ever fucking rocked. From like 1:13-1:24 Bachman is blowing my mind.

YouTube won't give me the full embed code, so I'll have to ask y'all to take yourselves to about 8:00 into this live version of Spacemen 3's "Suicide." Shit gets pretty nasty.

I tried to believe in this band based on the strength of this song. It didn't work out, but the song still lays waste.

Unlikely source, but this one's got it goin on:

Solo starts at 2:44, and goes to the end, but you might as well listen to the whole thing.

Like the last 30 seconds of Cream's Tales of Brave Ulysses are psychedelic lava. Can't find a good extended version on YT.

Losing my mind listening to this shit right now. Not too far removed from other League efforts, but with a lot more vicious psychedelic guitar insanity:

This is a very long performance, so there are plenty of moments of guitar insanity spread out all over the place. You should listen to the whole thing, because the band's playing wild, exciting music with a great deal of technical dexterity and inventiveness. I don't usually think about post-Suzuki Can when I think about Can, but the dudes kept on keeping on and wound up (accidentally? I'm not sure) contributing something worthwhile to an extension of the (tolerable) Zappa wing of jazz-rock fusion. I think so, anyway.
