Now that I think about, heaven sounds awesome. Count me in.

I am working on a paper on the social and personal functions of religion. I really want to quote, somewhere in my paper, the legendary members-only Ninja Turtles Fan Forum member Yancy saying "Now that I think about, heaven sounds awesome. Count me in."

A members-only Ninja Turtles Fan Forum influence definitely exists in my view of religion too yeah. Rough draft of this term paper I'm in the process of writing definitely references the Dalai Lama as a "solid bro."

Are parents telling kids that Islam is evil and that Muslims hate the West? I mean, they are plotting shit in Canada which seems pretty low to me.

My daughter is Catholic but I'm an atheist. It would be too disruptive right now to tell her that God is make-believe.

Hopefully like most smart kids she'll figure it out a few years after she learns the hard truth about Santa.

Yeah, the realization that Santa Claus was make-believe set off an awful chain reaction of constant doubt and cynicism for me.

I'm not allowing my kids to ever believe in Santa because the inevitable disenchantment is too much for some people to really handle.

I’ve got no problem with my 4 year old believing in Santa.
Pretty sure I’ve never even mentioned god to her and I’m not about to start, until she asks.

My older daughter is Catholic. Her mom got pretty mad a couple years back when I told my daughter I don’t believe in god. I was fine with it. I didn’t bring it up. My daughter asked about my religion I told her the truth. Just like I would do with any subject she asks me about.

She was 12 or 13 at the time.

The other day we were talking about psychics. She thinks they are real, I say they are BS. The conversation came around to various beliefs.
She thinks Noah & the ark really happened. I tried to offer a couple of questions on the topic.
I ended it with, if it works for you, great. Just don’t have blind allegiance. Ask questions.

    12 or 13 is fine.

I mean, not that I necessarily suggest lying to a child about such things is a good or bad idea, but by that age whatever.

I always assumed my parents were at least kind of nominally Christian because I went to church as a small child, but looking back my babysitters were always the ones taking me and they never actually demonstrated any degree of religiosity themselves.

i used to pretend i believed in God because my cousins did and i thought religion was something "cool" and "different" because my parents never talked about it at all. they just told me to "think for myself" until i eventually dropped the act.

i've decided to continue using religion-oriented colloquialisms like "thoughts & prayers" and "swear to God" because it conveys the proper sentiments even though i don't believe. just seems more pretentious to spend a lot of effort avoiding them.

Good policy. I've been known to say things like "thank god" even though anyone who knows me well understands I don't mean it literally. "There but for the random distribution go I" doesn't have the same ring to it.

you should see me try and avoid saying "God bless you" to people by shouting "Salud!", been generating some puzzled looks recently.

i guess maybe that's what motivates me to say something like "my thoughts and prayers are with you". i feel pretentious saying "Salud" all the time.

this is pretty reprehensible, hiding $57M in funds so they can't be targeted via legal challenges regarding sexual abuse. not as reprehensible as the systematic protection of sexual abusers, but the church leaders are pretty much scumbags, so par for the course.

Not being a religious person, I was still surprised to hear one person at Starbucks this morning say they've given up Facebook for Lent and the other person respond they have given up Instagram.

    Eh, it's okay. Religion.

I don't believe or seek solace in religion myself. Though I don't think blank unawareness or ignorance is healthy when religion is so important to humanity. From culture and custom to art and history- it's just important to know about.
