Okay, really. This is it. The corpse is blurred, so it's actually a lot less grisly than I'd anticipated. Still, don't watch this at work or in front of children.

White House defends Verizon phone record collection.

Don't think they are talking about records of the vinyl sort dawgs.

That doesn't bother me much more than DNA collection. Feels good to be an aging, future neo-con.

In the larger context it's pretty disturbing because it's only a matter of time before it's misused and abused against ordinary people, if it hasn't been already.

so its taken about 10 years and a change of party for people to realize the Patriot Act was a terrible idea?

really can't be bothered to give a shit about armchair quarterbacking over government surveillance that has only been growing in sophistication and legal justification for a decade with the complete support of status-quo mongering journalists.

i advocate starving this espionage-military-industrial complex of money until it falls apart. lots of resources is why the intelligence community thinks its a great idea to have a warehouse in Utah with years and years of phone and internet records assembling a national database on every American's habits.

just take the budget of that department from X amount of dollars to zero.

Pretty much agree with what Jasper said. I'm not so much troubled by the data collection itself as the size & expense of a government that can easily take on that kind of task. Just as I'm disgusted to be a small cog in a machine that buys tanks for $7 million each. Using them to police the world and kill people is a whole other level of shitty, but I'm bothered that it's a routine thing to begin with. Dunno how much sense any of that makes.

A minority always thought it was a bad idea. There's just more specific evidence than before about what's happening.

really can't be bothered to give a shit about armchair quarterbacking over government surveillance that has only been growing in sophistication and legal justification for a decade with the complete support of status-quo mongering journalists.
I don't like the term "armchair quarterbacking" in this context. It implies too much deference to authority.

I agree with the general sentiment but I think the "starve the beast" approach to government often leads to "dumb" cuts (like a lot of the sequester cuts) rather than the elimination of the truly unnecessary programs.

In August my cell phone plan runs out and it won't be renewed. I am just pitching my iPhone and probably my Macbook as well. I'm going underground for no other purpose than to enjoy the scenery down there.

that's fair. i'm just advocating the general strategy of going after these domestic spying programs from a resources rather than legal perspective since i don't think the legal case is very compelling in 2013. a commitment to reevaluating how much we spend on security across the board would be valuable. the create of the Department of Homeland Security is an underrated, terrible part of W. Bush's presidency.

Oh, so the NSA took emails and "other information" from Google, Facebook & Apple. Basically creating a giant database of Americans' behavior and I'm sure keeping it safe and secure where it will never leak or be sold to corporations.

I can't believe people aren't setting shit on fire right now.

I am not one to be particularly worried about my civil liberties because I don't think the government can really establish rights for me or take them away. But I got off Facebook and all forms of social media a while ago because of that shit. The only incriminating thing the government has on me is my affinity for Brazzers & BangBros, and like, whatever dude.

Corporations won't be able to get the info from the American govt.
You can bet the Chinese are tapping in to that info so they can sell it to corporations.

Prince being 55 makes me want to give up on life more than old news about the government tracking cellphones.
