Phife Dawg has died, and here's where I say I'm surprised how young he was and that no one should have to go at that age, or something. But let's save it this time, we all know that's ridiculous right?

Was grabbing a CD off the shelf on the way out the door this morning and I pulled Purple Rain halfway out but put it back and took Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts with me instead. Fuck!

Well this sucks. I've never really gotten into Prince's music, even though I recognize his incredible genius and influence. I've been meaning to sit down and really dig into it for a while and it looks like that is going to be the plan for the entire weekend.

This managed to surprise me even more than just about any other celebrity/artist death ever has.

I figured there'd be at least another decade of elderly people dropping dead before the thought of Prince dying would even occur to me. And it didn't, until around noon today! Alright.

I listened to all of his albums from the '70s and '80s, last week. Just felt like it, as it had been a while. What timing.

Basically spent the last 4 hours reading Twitter and clicking links people have been sharing with amazing Prince stories or interviews. It is cool to think he stayed in Minnesota though. He's such an other worldly personality I imagine him in LA or like Paris. But nope, dude stayed true to the Midwest and had parties all the time there.

Prince was one of the first musicians I considered to be a favourite. I can't even find the words.

    Some perfect words right here.
Frank Ocean wrote:"I’M NOT EVEN GONNA SAY REST IN PEACE BECAUSE IT’S BIGGER THAN DEATH. I NEVER MET THE MAN (I WAS TOO NERVOUS THE ONE TIME I SAW HIM) AND I NEVER SAW HIM PLAY LIVE, REGRETTABLY. I ONLY KNOW THE LEGENDS I’VE HEARD FROM FOLKS AND WHAT I’VE HEARD AND SEEN FROM HIS DEEP CATALOG OF PROPELLANT, FEARLESS, VIRTUOSIC WORK. MY ASSESSMENT IS THAT HE LEARNED EARLY ON HOW LITTLE VALUE TO ASSIGN TO SOMEONE ELSE’S OPINION OF YOU.. AN INFECTIOUS SENTIMENT THAT SEEMED SOAKED INTO HIS CLOTHES, HIS HAIR, HIS WALK, HIS GUITAR AND HIS PRIMAL SCREAM. HE WROTE MY FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME, ‘WHEN YOU WERE MINE’. IT’S A SIMPLE SONG WITH A SIMPLE MELODY THAT MAKES YOU WISH YOU THOUGHT OF IT FIRST, EVEN THOUGH YOU NEVER WOULD HAVE - A FLIRTATIOUS BRAND OF GENIUS THAT FEELS APPROACHABLE. HE WAS A STRAIGHT BLACK MAN WHO PLAYED HIS FIRST TELEVISED SET IN BIKINI BOTTOMS AND KNEE HIGH HEELED BOOTS, EPIC. HE MADE ME FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WITH HOW I IDENTIFY SEXUALLY SIMPLY BY HIS DISPLAY OF FREEDOM FROM AND IRREVERENCE FOR OBVIOUSLY ARCHAIC IDEAS LIKE GENDER CONFORMITY ETC. HE MOVED ME TO BE MORE DARING AND INTUITIVE WITH MY OWN WORK BY HIS DEMONSTRATION - HIS DENIAL OF THE PREVAILING MODEL…HIS FIGHT FOR HIS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY - ‘SLAVE’ WRITTEN ACROSS THE FOREHEAD, NAME CHANGED TO A SYMBOL… AN ALL OUT REBELLION AGAINST EXPLOITATION. A VANGUARD AND GENIUS BY EVERY METRIC I KNOW OF WHO AFFECTED MANY IN A WAY THAT WILL OUTRUN OBLIVION FOR A LONG WHILE. I’M PROUD TO BE A PRINCE FAN(STAN) FOR LIFE."

I haven't posted here in a while and it's sorta fitting that something like this brings me back... I worked near Grammaphone a few years back and one day on lunch break I decided to head over that way. As I was walking up a short man walked out that looked like the most stylish, good looking, and put together man I have ever seen. I looked at him and he sorta looked my way as he rushed past. It dawned on me a few minutes later that he vaguely looked like Prince. I found out a few minutes later that it was... Still blows me away typing the story because it was such a rushed experience, like 1 second, and yet it's still fresh in my mind like it was yesterday. Shopping at Grammaphone!!!!! RIP
