Making tentative plans to go to Amsterdam in January, after I celebrate NYE in Edinburgh.

I think my friend wants to go to the red light district.

Who am I to doubt him.

Planning on some sort of ~3 week holiday this upcoming northern hemisphere summer.

Either the US (New York, Chicago around the time of Pitchfork, then maybe San Fran before flying home via LA (other suggestions welcome, never been to America before)) or a return to Europe (would like most to visit Spain, Italy and Croatia).

Or I might just go off grid for a few weeks, take a bunch of books with me to a less touristy part of South East Asia and chill out.

    Suggestions are welcomed!

I'd skip LA if it were my decision and do a week each in NYC, Chi, and SF. If America's what you're doing that is.

Yeah I don't have really any interest in LA either - I just meant I'd be flying out of there as that's the way home for Australians. I'm probably leaning towards America at the moment but I'll weigh up my finances and the exchange rate (which is rapidly worsening) at the end of the month.

A week in NYC will seem too short, a week in *just* SF will seem too long - but far too short if you try to check out the East Bay, the coastline, and wine country also - and I can't really speak to Chicago, although my sense from a weekend there was that a week would be a nice amount of time to spend there. My gut says: bulk up your time in NYC if you're after city living, bulk up your CA time if you're after a balance of small town and nature, and bulk up your Chi time if you're after drinking and eating.

All you need is 2-3 days in Chicago. It's a big city but not much to see or do. Unless you like riding elevators up tall buildings to get a view of more tall buildings and hitting up a few good restaurants.

I'd suggest more time in NYC and San Fran. San Fran in particular because a trip to wine country is incredible.

If you happen to come to wine country, get in touch w/ me and I'll help you have an excellent time. This goes for anyone coming up this way.

Ditto that. In fact, if a gardener ever makes their way to Wine Country, we should join forces at Gotts Roadside or something and toast to nothing,

I really know nothing about the place, so any suggestions would be great!

It looks like me and a couple of pals might hit up Italy and the Iberian peninsula in August, but the USA suggestions are noted for next time around.

San Francisco exclusively, or the surrounding area as well? In the city, eat at Swan's Oyster Depot. Old school. Go to Hayes Valley for shopping and just kicking it. Good area w/ a great sake shop and an A+ wine bar/shop. Smoke a joint and drink a beer in Dolores Park - unless it's still under construction? - in the mission. Get bread from Tartine - right near Dolores Park -; it comes out of the oven at 4:30pm every day. Go to the Mikkeller Bar in the Tenderloin and drink awesome beer. Check out the view of the city from Twin Peaks and take an obligatory picture of the radio tower/monster that haunts those hills. Grab a pint at Toronado. Walk Haight St. Avoid Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. Catch live music at The Great American or Bottom of the Hill. Walk in late to State Bird Provisions, sit at the bar, and enjoy one of the best meals you've ever had.

I have loads of other suggestions if they're willing to BART over to the East Bay or drive up North to Sonoma County.

You don't want to get too close to those Mexican illegals is what he is trying to say. Skip Chicago and go to LA so that you can get a tan and talk to beautiful women.
