    local politics Empty local politics

Post by ClosetOfExhaustion Thu Apr 06, 2017 11:06 am

really wanted to just discuss the upcoming IL governors race, but figured we could use a thread for all non-national elections.

the dem challengers are lining up to be
    JB Pritzker (billionaire)
    Chris Kennedy (rich lineage)
    Ameya Pawar (progressive Alderman)
    Daniel Biss (state senator)

maybe 1 or 2 others tbd?

i'm wary of the attention the media will give to Pritzker and Kennedy -- for example we already knew they were both running, however Pirtzker's "official announcement" today has warranted Breaking News alerts in chicago. This recalls the press anointing Rahm as our Mayor as soon as they found out he was running. I'm already firmly in the Biss camp (phd in mathematics, very pragmatic, probably lacks necessary charisma).

a commentor on the capitol fax blog noted regarding the Dem primary, "we have 2 challengers for the rich lane, 2 challengers for the smart lane, and no one yet in the centrist lane."

I like Pawar. He's progressive but pragmatic (thought this of course has meant going along with some boneheaded ideas from the mayor). I'm always leery of more billionaires in politics and look forward to hearing more about Bliss.

There's this amazing anti-Cook County Soda Tax commercial featuring this resentful, frustrated mom-character talking to the camera like "I can't afford to buy groceries for my family!" and straight up saying that she has to "drive to Indiana" to buy Pepsi for her kids or whatever. It ends with a line like "if you don't repeal this tax...I will remember it!"

I can't find it anywhere online and I'm afraid that after today it may never air again. It's just one of the most remarkable performances of petulant outrage in an ad that I've ever seen, I really want it preserved for the future but I fear it may be too late.

when Berkeley/Oakland passed the soda tax in the past few years, the messaging that the soda lobby put out focused on local, minority-owned businesses. they had lots of grocery/liquor store owner types on camera saying "these taxes hurt jobs and put people like us out of work". it was incredibly cynical, of course, since the health of communities of color is devastated by sugary drinks.

the cook county soda tax was overturned today by the county finance board, so it's basically dead as of 12/1 (i think? not sure when it gets rolled away exactly).

i'm all for getting people to stop being soda slammers, that shit aint good for you. not sure this was the right way to handle it.

i think it's unfortunate that soda/sugar taxes are really regressive, but there's no other argument against them except "freedom". the negative public health effects from sugary drinks is an epidemic and costs billions of dollars.

shifting that tax burden onto corporations and other producers of the drinks is my preferred method. again, its unfortunate that in lieu of being able to pass any state or national tax reform because Republicans suck, local governments pass regressive taxes on poor people.

I thought about mentioning that the woman in the ad was hispanic, felt like it had to be somehow relevant but I really wasn't sure how.

I've seen that ad. Reminded me of an ad from years ago (discussed on LoPP if I recall correctly) where a mother says something like "I don't need politicians to tell me what to feed my children." Might have been about HFCS? I forget.

Anyway, I think the board itself still has to formally repeal the tax. So far it's been pretty hugely unsuccessful in Cook County since people apparently drive to Dupage or Indiana for fucking pop.

This was a great tactic in 2016 and I feel like voters are really eager to lap it up again.

    Daniel Biss.

I'd vote for Kennedy if he ends up getting the nomination (obviously far more likely than Biss), but Pritzker is a step too far. I'm not even really voting my conscience or making some grand moral statement. I just won't continue to contribute to the degeneration of our democratic process by supporting candidates who use their inherited personal fortunes to buy themselves elected office.

I hate Pritzker. I'll vote for him if he gets the nomination because Rauner doesn't know how to govern. Four years later we can vote for someone else.

I've read no analysis on the topic but I can't imagine why a guy like Biss couldn't become governor, particularly against a vulnerable republican like Rauner.

kennedy has no shot, biss is likely overtaking him in any internal polls these guys are running. at the dem primary debate last week JB spent zero time attacking kennedy and instead went after biss. he's not worried about kennedy.
kennedy has no money, no fundraising, no legit campaign apparatus, and only a last name at this point.

if you don't want JB, Biss is 100% where you should be. i'm no JB fan, but i'd also vote for him 1,000x before i'd let Rauner plunder our state any further (or, god forbid, Ives somehow end up on the repub ticket)

JB has been churning out ads for quite some time while I’ve only noticed Biss ads in the past week. I much prefer Biss and would feel better about casting my vote for him over JB.

Also, Rauner was on my flight from NYC last week. It was odd. He had 1 cop as his security detail, he boarded before anyone even though he was in an Exit Row & had no security detail next to him. I guess I don’t know what a governor gets from a security standpoint but I thought it was funny.

I want to run for office... maybe state senate. Gotta establish roots somewhere though I guess. Maybe I should get a real job in a real place and live there for more than a year or two.

Might go to a Rhode Island Democrats meeting tomorrow eve. But it’s competing with drunk trivia at a shitty casino bar, so tough call.

Am  I just reading too much into that article or is part of the takeaway supposed to be that thus is really all Democrats' fault for gerrymandering the district?

Also I don't know if I should have pozzed zappo' s post or not and I don't know why I did it, I mean it isn't "funny" or anything like that. Fuck any TV station that actually airs it (WGN).
