I've never found him excessively funny but I think you probably do get it, Michael K. The problem is that there just isn't much to get...

I'm going to see Stewart Lee on Thursday. He will be the first comic I've ever seen in person, the first being Jimmy Carr, which led me to realise that I don't find Jimmy Carr amusing at all.

I enjoy Reggie's semi-improvised loop pedal tunes more than his meta comedy, but both are pretty great. I'm happy he found a way to get paid for it, appearing in the first ad of this year's super bowl.

Chrono my gut take on this is similar to your podcast. I think you need to add another person to riff with, like you did with hungrywales in your Cribs video. It's really hard to do this kind of stuff as a solo act. If you're really interested in doing character work you might consider taking an improv class. I don't want to discourage you, and I don't think you suck, it's just that the audience is more engaged when there's some kind of conflict and the easiest way to make that happen when you're starting out is to have two people playing off and challenging one another.

To answer your call for suggestions though I'd love to see your impressions of some SOMB/YSG personae past or present as you perceive them to be on the board or irl.

This has the potential to be hilarious, although I understand if Jasper doesn't feel inspired to work up material for an audience of ten, or however many regulars we're down to.

Yeah, Reggie Watts is good. I also enjoy David O'Doherty's musical comedy stylings, even if all the individual jokes are fairly obvious

pretty much this. he just seems like a nice guy with a very cool talent for improvised beat boxing. his persona is just likable to me, i couldn't point to big things he's been in besides that TED talk that i really like.

but honestly so frustrating when people of color feel like they can speak from a position of authority over all racial issues (even ones they haven't experienced) by virtue of that fact that they are a minority.

this isn't about "not getting comedy" or "not having a sense of humor" really. it's about not being able to recognize an ally when you have one in Colbert and lashing out on some nonsensical "you can't break down stereotypes with stereotypes!" line rather than doing anything to fight real oppression in the world. ironically, that's a tactic borrowed from white liberals who would rather moan about stuff like organic food than address extremely substantive issues like urban poverty.

also if anyone has any thoughts about the Nick Cannon whiteface controversy we can roll this thread up nicely into the elite comedy/racial deconstruction thread.

Late in the 1990s, Larkin began working as a stand-up comedian into the 2000s. His musical output has slowed as a result.

Larkin was born and raised in Detroit, but did not participate in the early years of Detroit techno because he was serving in the military.

using all my fingers and toes, i can't count the number of times I've sat down for a half hour, planning on turning in for the night, and then had it turn into drinking the rest of the beers and watching random norm youtubes.

Sometime during the summer I got into a Norm YouTube hole that lasted like five straight hours. My stomach hurt from laughing so much by the end of it.

What did you guys think of the Chappelle material?

Seen couple little bits I thought were funny. THere's two specials on Netflix right? Gonna probably hit that up in the very near future.

I dug the Chappelle shits, for the most part. Much looser than his old, taught, surgical shit, but still funny. And far more sober and coherent than his shows in Chicago, from which I understand the third special will be culled, last year. Feels weird to be vaguely disappointed (which I was, in spite of my best efforts not to be) by something I'd describe as "pretty damn good," but the bar's just so high.

The best part of the first special was watching how desperately and awkwardly he wanted a cigarette. I thought, at first, that there was maybe some contractual thing with Netflix which forbade images of smoking...but then the backdrop was him with a cigarette in his mouth. I dunno.

Yeah, I liked both of them. I was nervous about it though, because the bar is really high and a fifteen year hiatus only magnifies that.

The new Louie shit kind of sucks though.

comedy is so of the moment, it's hard to expect anyone to be able to have their pulse on the culture 10 or more years down the road from when they got famous

i stopped watching anything Louie and am not excited to watch Chappelle stuff even though i'll probably like it
