Can't say I feel anything at all about that song, other than the decision to actually utter the "word" "speedom" during it was a poor one.

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
I think that Eminem verse is a pretty good example of why people who critique contemporary hip-hop 4 dismissing the importance of lyricism should reconsider their approach. I'm sure there R probably some pretty clever lines hidden within that word salad, but his delivery makes it entirely incomprehensible and grating.

This Danny Brown album is bonkers! I don't know that I hear a Joy Division influence but it is certainly a unique & impressive album in a year full of terrific rap albums.

I thought it was joke rap bullshit with a barely even a smidgeon of genius at the time, but the more I hang out with Johnny Manseed, the more that I think N3gro League is on some truly inspired holy shit this is better than jesus mixed with diamond dallas paige level. I hope that they meet Gucci in prison some day and get snatched up by a label.

sorry for hijacking an otherwise useful thread with my plug one bullshit, but I don't like other music nowadays other than the song where Andre 3000 raps (stick tap jesus jones for that recommendation... or maybe it was nick)

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
as with every single Migos project to date, this is at least 80% throwaways. unfun, navel-gazing trap with absolutely no point. mostly uninspired production. then there's songs like "T-Shirt", "Slippery", "Brown Paper Bag" and "Kelly Price" that are listenable, but completely dwarfed by "Bad and Boujee".
of course, it got a Pitchfork BNM because it will be culturally relevant and they want to seem smart. they're not.

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
great trap music is such a fragile alchemy. to the untrained ear there may not be that much difference between "Bad and Boujee" and "T Shirt", but the gulf between them is enormous. a great song like "Bad and Boujee" is so much more than the sum of it's parts. each element works in concert with the other to amplify their impact. the sparse production makes the vocals hit harder. the chorus ties all the verses together expertly. each individual verse is bursting with personality and fun imagery. it's perfect.

I've enjoyed Migos (not that I've gone deep) but this sudden cultural importance placed on them based on a Childish Gambino endorsement has been a real head-scratcher for me.

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
there are other things that have helped them get popular other than DG, but it's kinda gross that was so visible and snagging the credit. they've been making fun songs for many many years. i became aware of them in 2012. i loved this:
they're definitely not worth going deep on though. i was disappointed by the non-hit tracks on their early mixtapes and Culture is no different. imo there just isn't a lot of thought or effort put into rounding out the album cuts on a popular rap album like this.
i think there's something about how fun Migos are at their best that makes people overly exuberant about their music. and i can see why. songs like "Versace" and "Bad and Boujee" are so dynamic and vibrant that you wish they had dozens like them. it's easy to look at the whole group with rose-tinted glasses in light of those amazing tracks.

It was a weird way to end work yesterday explaining to 20 year olds who Migos are and watching them get frustrated because I didn't know who Leon Bridges is.

i get such a kick out of rappers performing on late night TV. so funny to me. but it's also great because you get these reimaginings of simple instrumentals. two of my favorites so far this year:

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
This whole time I thought that line in "Bad & Boujee" went "She a dot dot dot", as in "she is a woman of such ill-repute that the coarsest language is insufficient to describe her and so I will instead trail off with an ellipses."
