Someone that rides a Harley Davidson, wears leather, is bearded and tattooed.

A bikie gang is a group of these motorcyclists that engage in organised criminal activity. I'm sure they're not confined to australia.

Queensland these days is basically as hard conservative as they come (state government has a ridiculous conservative or Liberal / National Party majority - they hold 78 seats compared to the centre-left Labor's 7.) Wouldn't mind if they sectioned themselves off and formed their own separate country tbh, the Newman government is a bunch of absolute schmucks.

They can use some branding changes.

A homegirl I have in Australia is freaking out a bit about some recent political changes over there but I can't really understand what she's talking about and I'm lazy.

Do Australians hate immigrants? Or just immigration?

I'm getting all these impressions from reading r/australia.

In general, I would say Australia is a relatively racist place. Depending on where you are, of course, but even then, casual racism sometimes creeps in. Inner Melbourne is very left-leaning; Queensland on the other hand is our equivalent of the deep south. Etc.

As for immigration, our new government is very keen on protecting our borders and "stopping boats". So, make of that what you will.

I wish Brits and Aussies would stop meddling in shit they don't know. This reminds of the time that Guardian writer was like "yeah, fuck yea, I love Neil Young, Trans is a classic album."

the Aussie government didn't outlaw segregation until the mid-70s, right?

Australia is another "New Europe" country like the United States that was, at one point, completely aboriginal and is now predominantly white and dominated by European native plants and livestock. they also have a tangled history with Asian immigrants and the legacy of exploitation in the gold/diamond mining industry.

these "New Europe" countries like the U.S., Australia, and South Africa tend to have very complicated race relations.

wasn't until Gough was PM in the 1970s that the White Australia Policy finally ended and the Racial Discrimination Act was introduced (part of this is now being dismantled by the Abbott gov't, gahhh :/)

    pretty much.

i went with some other students up to the northern territory last year and spent some time in a remote aboriginal community. seeing the fruition of years of racial tension instigated by colonisation was pretty galling for an upper middle class kid from Victoria, to say the least

Feeling in a ranty mood so I thought I might update this thread with a few things that have happened since the ultra-conservative Tony Abbott took the prime ministership last September:

    - The government continues to name the introduction of a carbon tax by the previous government as a scapegoat for the closure of major Australian businesses, despite these same businesses declaring that the tax was not the reason for their closure.

    - The proposed national broadband network has been downgraded.

    - Endangered species of shark are being mindlessly culled in Western Australia.

    - The national public broadcaster, the ABC, has been accused of left-wing bias, despite independent studies declaring the opposite. The Prime Minister has expressed his wish that the ABC would "bat for the home team" a little more.

    - The policy director of a heavily right-wing think tank has been appointed the Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission. This same right-wing think tank had previously argued for the abolition of the Human Rights Commission.

    - A review of our Renewable Energy Target is being undertaken by a man that denies climate change exists.

    - Pay rises to childcare workers and aged care workers have been cut.

    - Amendments to the Racial Discrimination Act have been proposed, which vastly broaden the situations in which racist comment is exempt from a finding of discrimination. The government has rationalised these changes by flagging the need to protect the freedom of bigots.

    - Meanwhile, government employees are being actively encouraged to report fellow public servants if they criticise government policy in a private capacity on social media. The Australia Council has been instructed to cut funding to arts groups which “unreasonably” refuse corporate sponsorship. There has also been a proposal to ban environmental business boycotts.

    - Announcements have been made foreshadowing cuts in funding to the only very newly established National Disability Insurance Scheme.

    - Minimum pay rates for young workers between 17 and 24 have been halved. Young workers are now also exempt from the workplace health and safety laws.

    - A review into the national school curriculum has been announced. This will be undertaken by two conservative white men. One of these men has already flagged his desire to return the curriculum's focus to Australia's "Judeo-Christian tradition".

    - Free legal aid to asylum seekers has been cut.

    - Applications are being made for 74,000 hectares of forest to be removed from World Heritage Protection.

    - In relation to protected forest areas, Prime Minister Abbott said: “We have quite enough national parks, we have quite enough locked up forests already. In fact, in an important respect, we have too much locked up forest.”

    - The Federal Environment Minister did not attend the latest climate change summit.

    - Knights and dames, abolished as an honour in Australia in the 1980s, are returning as an imperial honour award.

    - There is no longer a Federal Minister for Science. There is one woman in the Cabinet (the highest echelon of the ministry), and eighteen men. The Minister for Women is a man. The Minister for Indigenous Affairs is not Indigenous.

Every Austrialian I've ever met has been really cool but so much of that country and the culture seems really fucked up and yes I realize what that means for an American to make such a statement.
