I understand it's for getting jobs, but I signed up for it a few years ago because my wife asked me to, so I did and promptly forgot about it. Lately I've been getting a lot of requests from long lost drinking buddies and people I've dealt with on ebay asking me to recommend their professional skills.

It's useful if you are in sales or HR. Otherwise, not so much.

Re: Linkedin
A group of people at a bar were talking about this site and I asked them if they'd ever gotten a single thing out of it. There was a good five seconds of silence.

Re: Linkedin
I joined cause a bunch of my friends were sending me email requests. I threw together a quick joke profile in 5 minutes with a blurry picture of me wearing a captain's hat and promptly proceeded to ignore it for 2 years. Recently been getting a bunch of requests and "endorsements" of skills and shit. Pretty stupid.

Re: Linkedin
i've gotten a few messages from HR professionals asking if i'd be interested in open positions they have. nothing has been worth responding to, but if I get bored with what i'm doing it might be useful for finding potential new avenues.
i am, however, really amused when someone like my best friend's dad, who i see once every 2 or 3 years, endorses me for a skill every now and then.

Re: Linkedin
I've gotten about 30 job offers on there in the last month alone, most of them straight up no interview offers. Most better paying than what I get here, but I'm lazy and refuse to leave a company before I've been there at least a year. No endorsement shit, cause i don't really friend anyone but my family.

Re: Linkedin
My friend made me make one because it's how she got her graduate position, and she told me things like "when you send in job applications now the FIRST THING HR reps do is look you up on linkedin" and "connecting with a firm's HR rep is a good way to get your foot in the door!" So I have one, but I rarely update it or look at it. I probably should be on there more, but I cbfed, and it all seems kind of silly and gross tbh.

Re: Linkedin
It's true that HR ppl live and breathe in LinkedIn. If you are beyond an entry level position or applying for a job, it's a good idea to keep your profile updated.

Re: Linkedin
Really starting to get cynical with doing non thrilling work for the man, and efforts by people to promote their ability in doing so really depresses/enrages me.
Been having lots of "what's the point of it all man!!" discussions with myself in my head lately.

Re: Linkedin
Feeling both of these sentiments. If I ever lose my current cushy telecommuting job, I doubt I can ever stand to work for the man again. Starting over at a new company and potentially having to be in an office 40+ hours a week are both terrifying prospects.Ned Braden wrote:Really starting to get cynical with doing non thrilling work for the man, and efforts by people to promote their ability in doing so really depresses/enrages me.

I'd probably just see if we could get by on my soon-to-be wife's salary and whatever I can make playing poker.

Re: Linkedin
This hit home pretty hard when I saw it the other day:
http://www.theonion.com/articles/study-zero-people-have-led-satisfying-lives-after,33887/
No way this isn't totally true right? My 5 year plan includes a massive change of some sort. Either getting the man (navy) to pay me for completely different and non-warfare related reasons (see: pay for free law school or make me an international diplomat officially... not sure what my chances are) or getting out altogether and starting anew. I've never actually had a real job in my life. The closest I came were coaching little league, hitting golfballs and driving the cart around a driving range, and making sausages at a barbecue one summer. In that order.

I'm such a spoiled bastard, and I love how easy life has been to this point. But I certainly see some storms on the horizon. X post that WP thread about the hardest years of life... I'm really not sure what 36 year old Ned Braden is going to be up to. Other than (hopefully) lookin' sweet.

It's the slavesowners who were nice to their slaves that were the worst of all. It allowed the slaves to begrudgingly conform to their situation rather than rise up against it. You've got to free yourself mon!! You've got to say, "IM A HUMAN BEING DAMN IT!"Duff... wrote:Eh, non-thrilling work is fine, just enjoy yourself when not at work.
