I don’t even know what to say anymore when these tragedies happen. I’m as upset about kids dying as I am about the total inaction and cowardice of our government.

I am now more upset by the total inaction and cowardice of the government than I am about the deaths. And that also pisses me off/makes me feel disappointed in myself. But I'm really pissed!

i find the the narrative being pushed that this Ft. Lauderdale shooting is "the turning point" to be very depressing. same shit everyone tried to say after Newtown. it's fine that the people who were actually affected by the tragedy have an emotional response and say things like "we will be the LAST school shooting", but the way the media then pushes that narrative is gross to me.

maybe it's okay that people are optimistic and seizing the moment to make their voice heard loudly, but to me it feels more like people want to delude themselves into believing this battle can be "won" overnight when realistically it will take decades to change America's gun culture. school shootings usually inspire copycats, so there will likely be another one relatively soon. sorry if this line of thinking is too cynical, but...

You're not wrong, but I think a necessary step in changing things is to "delude ourselves" into thinking we can win. Indeed, the right's greatest attribute, especially on this particular topic, is their ability and willingness to delude themselves into believing whatever they have to.

The work these kids are doing in the immediate aftermath of this tragedy is really inspiring. I've heard that there are plans for our nation's high school students to mobilize a mass walkout on April 20th and organize sit-ins at the offices of Republican federal and state lawmakers.

These Parkland kids are really something. I feel a certain twinge in my heart when I see kids walk down the street this weekend. I want something better for them than the depravity of consumption and mass media culture. I also know they’re going to figure it out.

my one conservative friend used to point his empty shotgun at us when we played Halo at his house and i hated it

Polls like these are deceptive. You can find data that suggests millennials increasingly identify as socialist while also finding data that suggests they are socially reactionary and illiberal. It just seems like bad methodology to me.

I have a lot of illiberal, Trumpen proletariat family members and I've been shocked at their responses to this most recent shooting. One of my gun owning and Trump supporting cousins is completely distraught and has made several Facebook posts about the need for government regulation. He has also promised to attend marches and sit-ins.

Can you imagine going to school with armed guards?

These dudes would shoot dozens of innocent people a year if every school had one.

Like, even if they were all stable, motivated and "well-trained" individuals, how would this not be anything but completely inevitable?

The entire concept of how this would amplify the atmosphere of violence in schools is impossible to communicate to anyone who's already made up their mind about these solutions.

Neighbor of mine was blaming the Florida students for not fighting back, last week. Like, why didn't they just bum-rush the shooter and put an end to things? I was like, "Do you blame the Jews for the Holocaust, too?" That was the end of the conversation.

There was an interesting episode of The Daily last Friday about the history of the AR-15. Before the assault weapons ban of 1994 there was almost no interest for the weapon in the market. After the expiration of that ten year ban the weapon had achieved notoriety because of its previous illegality. In the past fourteen years we have seen a huge spike in sales and that correlates with the rise in mass shootings.

It was really interesting to her snippets of audio from Bill Clinton when he was signing that legislation back in 1994. He says something to the effect of "I've heard people say these are used for target practice but I think those people ought to find a good book to read." I guess it's comments like these that activities the persecution complex of the permanently beleaguered right.

And while I can understand that cognitively, I actually think shaming these people is unfortunately the most effective tactic that we have at our disposal. The NRA has more virgins per capita than any other lobbying group in the USA, pass that shit on!

Florida House declares porn a public health risk shortly after denying assault rifle ban
By Avery Anapol - 02/21/18 09:25 AM EST

Florida lawmakers on Tuesday passed a resolution declaring pornography a public health risk, less than an hour after they rejected a motion to consider a bill that would ban assault rifles.

The Florida House of Representatives opened its Tuesday session with a motion to debate a bill banning assault rifles, which it rejected by a 36-71 vote within three minutes, according to The Washington Post.

In the same session, less than an hour later, according to the newspaper, the legislature considered a GOP-backed bill to declare porn a public health risk, which it passed by a voice vote.

During the debate, state Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith (D) questioned state Rep. Ross Spano, the GOP lawmaker who presented the pornography bill, asking if pornography has killed anyone or caused first responders to seek counseling for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Smith later criticized Spano and the bill to The Associated Press.

“[Spano] was saying porn as a health risk was more important to address here in the Florida Legislature than the epidemic of gun violence," Smith told the AP. "These are their priorities. I don't understand the politics, to be honest, if I'm being honest. I'm not aware there's a base of voters who are losing sleep every night over the epidemic of pornography as a public health crisis."

Survivors of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School were present in the gallery watching while the lawmakers voted not to consider the ban on assault rifles, and many have since intensified their calls to vote the lawmakers out of office.

Sheryl Acquaroli, a junior from Stoneman Douglas, told CNN that the lawmakers’ decision to not consider the assault rifle ban was “heartbreaking.” Police say the gunman used an AR-15 assault rifle, purchased legally, to kill 17 people and injure 14 others at the school last Wednesday.

“It was just so heartbreaking to see how many names were up there, especially after it was my school,” Acquaroli said. “It seemed almost heartless how they immediately pushed the button to say 'no.'”
