Re: Big Ears Fest 2014
That's an amazing weekend of music. Probably worth the price too. How far is Nashville from Knoxville, because I have a friend I could stay with in the former location and that's the only way I could think to make this weekend possible.

Re: Big Ears Fest 2014
Yeah. I've been talking to my friend and he knows some people in Knoxville we can crash with. Looking like this actually might become a reality, which would be really fucking cool.
Thanks for the heads up dogg!
How quickly do you expect tickets to sell out?

Re: Big Ears Fest 2014
Probably not that quickly, there's no big indie name draw here. I'll be buying mine tomorrow at noon when tickets are released.

Re: Big Ears Fest 2014
I'm getting in the car soon and driving the 8 hours to Knoxville. Ridiculously hungover so driving for this long is going to be a bitch. Excited about this experience though.

I'm going to listen to a lot of CCR on this drive because sometimes being predictable can be enjoyable.

Re: Big Ears Fest 2014
Also dogs, before the fest started I went to get some sushi in downtown Knoxville. Once we where seated I looked over to my left and I was basically touching shoulders with a table the consisted of Tim Hecker, Stephen O'Malley, and two other people I didn't recognize. It took every fiber of my being not to entertain my inner child and be all like "fuck ya, so excited for you guys sets this weekend!" I just sat there and felt giddy.
I saw Stephen, Colin Stetson, the first half of Vatican Shadow, Cale, and Hecker yesterday. Cale was by far the worst. Stetson was fucking electric. O'Malley was fucking crazy. Vatican Shadow sounded pretty tight and I loved the club that all three of them were playing in. And Hecker. Oh my god Hecker.
I'm seeing Marc Ribot do "The Kid" this morning. Before I do Oneohtrix, and then Mark McGuire, Orcutt, Television, and Nazoranai (Keji Haino, Oren Ambararchi, & O'Malley).
It Does Not Get Better Than This! Also, I really enjoy the downtown area of Knoxville. It is a great backdrop for this experience.

Re: Big Ears Fest 2014
I will say the scheduling was awful. They put Nils Frahm then 15 minutes later at another venue Mark McGuire then 30 minutes later Steve Reich's Drumming and Bill Orcutt at the same time, while both of those were going on Low's set was supposed to start (it started late, but because I left drumming earlier) it just pissed me off.

I'm still awake from Sunday morning. I had to drive back last night after Reich and didn't get back to Chicago until about 8am. I have class today from 1pm to 6pm. Don't give a fuck though.DBaggins wrote:I'll have to get back to it later. Got home at like 3 in the morning and at work at 7am.

I've been making more of an effort to tell musicians I run into that I appreciate their work in simple terms. So far they seem to really appreciate it.

Re: Big Ears Fest 2014
I ended up talking to some dude and his wife before Mark McGuire. He ended up buying me two PBR tallboys and refused to take any money from me. A really solid dude. I dipped out for a second between McGuire and Orcutt to smoke a cigarette and O'Malley literally almost ran right into me. We made eye contact and I told him I really enjoyed his set the previous day. He seemed to appreciate that and was immediately bombarded by a bunch of dudes who had a million questions for him. I was already pretty drunk by that time so I just thought it was amusing and cool.
Also, I was wearing an Earth shirt at my first class and I ended up talking to my Badiou professor about Reich, Greenwood, and The Velvet Underground for a while after class. He was explaining Badiou's concept of the event through rock n roll. Also, this guy studied under both Davidson and Derrida and sounds a lot like Neil Young. He is a really cool guy basically. I skipped my second class and I am about to go to sleep finally.

I approached a stone-faced, brooding Michael Gira a couple years ago to tell him this. For a second I thought he was about to grab my throat before breaking into a huge smile and thanking me. He also said he hoped I would enjoy their show later that evening.
Which I very much did.

Re: Big Ears Fest 2014
The line-up is pretty alright thus far. I'd like to see Terry Riley and Grouper. Probably can't go this year though so fuck.
