Selected Ambient Works, a Thread Empty Selected Ambient Works, a Thread

Post by chrondog Tue Oct 31, 2017 3:31 pm

I fell asleep to Music for Airports last night and am mellowing the fuck out at work today with this today:

Selected Ambient Works, a Thread The-tired-sounds-of-stars-of-the-lid

In this thread let's talk about ambient and lighter droney music. Would love to hear everyone's personal favorites and experiences so I'm not relying on this: https://pitchfork.com/features/lists-and-guides/9948-the-50-best-ambient-albums-of-all-time/

Gas' Pop is one of my favorite listens these last few years for a sense of my background. Harmony in Ultraviolet is an album I remember from the beginning of my SOMB days and it's enjoyable, but sometimes the tension in that style of record is too much.

    Let's enjoy tones ITT.

I love Pop but I don't have anything left to say about it at this point. I don't listen to his other albums as much, I may still have a moment with them some day, I don't know. Narkopop kind of bores me but maybe there's a place for that kind of thing in my life, I don't know. Both of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works albums are great, I may prefer the first one for sentimental/nostalgic reasons. I enjoy Stars of the Lid a lot, too. Does anyone with an opinion actually dislike them?

I still listen to a ton of Ambient music, but I tend to cycle through the same artists.

Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline: This is my favorite ambient album. I enjoy all of their records I've heard but this one takes the cake. December Hunting for Vegetarian Fuckface is a classic track.

A Winged Victory for the Sullen - S/T: Another enjoyable album very much SotL inspired. Atmos was pretty good but for strings playing tones, this is a really good jam.

Eluvium - Lambent Material & Talk Amongst the Trees: Both enjoyable distorted tonal albums. He has some good stuff on later releases too but none that play through front to back as well as these IMO

Keith Fullerton Whitman - Playthroughs & Multiples & Lisbon: The former is the king of 'tones', very peaceful and interesting. Multiples has Stereo Music for Yamaha Disklavier Prototype which is a pretty cool blend of Steve Reich polyrythmic musical repetition and tonal love making. Lisbon is a good mix of the two played live.

Fennesz - Venice: While I think Endless Summer is a better album, Venice is more 'ambient' and plays really nicely when falling to sleep, sans that one track where there is singing which has actually woken me up multiple times.

Julianna Barwick - Nepenthe: Ambient singing. The Harbinger is my favorite track on this long player.

I think there are other albums on the cusp of Ambient but I tried to throw some late night relaxing could fall asleep to or become totally engaged in Ambient. Not stuff like Tim Hecker or Radicalfashion or Machinefabrik or even Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, who all have some great albums that get grouped into this genre often.

Someone put their new album on Youtube like two months ago and it still hasn't gotten 500 plays.

Granted, it was kinda put to raise money for charity and they probably spend $0 on publicity for it, but it's just weird how no one is paying any attention to it.

Ok actually I do want to point this one out because I feel like it didn't get a ton of love and I think its pretty great. A nice Ambient/Shoegaze blend that sounds great in the Autumn/Winter

here are some great ambient albums from recent times:

    https://privateelevators.bandcamp.com/album/la-looks
    private elevators - la looks
sounds like simple drones but deceptively complex, pensive, and kind of mysterious.

    https://antlrd.bandcamp.com/album/cherubian
    ant'lrd - cherubian
full disclosure - colin is one of my best friends. these are great sunbaked ambient vignettes that offer plenty in either a background or close listening environment.

    https://pioulard.bandcamp.com/album/lignin-poise
    benoit pioulard - lignin poise
pretty much everything tom meluch does is great. he's a friend and we've toured together, so i'm a bit biased, but you can't really go wrong with his discography, especially the ambient records he's made in the past couple years. this is a new one filled with gorgeous, washy guitar drones.

    i'll post more soon

I fondly remember when Precis came out...more than ten years ago. Fuck. I had just moved to Tokyo, and it definitely had the right vibe.

i'm mostly interested in some relatively sleepier stuff at the moment, but i don't want to get too narrow in this thread. i mostly like to hear albums that make other people passionate. if someone i know has a compelling reason to get into it, it's probably worth checking out.

i saw a little bit of a set from these dudes last night https://goldenretriever.bandcamp.com/

they were running a saxophone through some crazy pedals, it sounded awesome.

checking my iTunes, I gave this track a rare 4-star rating

had no idea they have a new album, will be part of my next deep listening extravaganza (along with this if I can/have to wait until Friday)

not too trance. i like trance music anyway. i think the electronic bleeps and bloops are fine and can sound lush and organic. this track was solid, but didn't grab me.

C-poots wrote:A Winged Victory for the Sullen - S/T: Another enjoyable album very much SotL inspired. Atmos was pretty good but for strings playing tones, this is a really good jam.

this is really good. very Stars of the Lid vibe, but a brisk 44 minutes. even more sentimental with the strings than Stars of the Lid. nice pianos too.

listening to some Spotify ambient playlists today made me think of Nico Jaar, which then made me realize that Jaar is probably responsible for my very soft and slow introduction to ambient and "soundscape-y" music.

Did you listen to the Brian Eno album The Ship from last year? I ate some red Vietnam kratom and floated to heaven while listening to this the other day. Highly recommended with or without the kratom.

    no doubt brother

And the Refinement of Their Decline has so many stunning compositions on it. and a very, ahem, refined sound. i still think i prefer The Tired Sounds Of... because it's so dusty, so bleak, and thematically tight. but, track for track, Refinement is hard to beat.

I can totally identify this. SotL have been the most played band on every device or streaming service I've had since discovering them like 10 years ago. There is something timeless and never boring about their songs which is so odd because my favorites contain maybe 10 notes, max.

They make me want to get a keyboard, learn some shit, and play around in Garage Band. Get a few multi-track recorders, record some nature sounds and environmental noise, put together some lazy compositions.

Getting excited about music is fun. They have some good tracks on their less notable albums too:
