    Last Compact Disc you purchased

Post by Ted Falconi on Sun Aug 24, 2014 8:51 pm

I bought Hunky Dory and Double Nickels on cd for 4.99 each today. Pretty happy with both of these purchases, even though I've already got the records.
I had them both on cassette in the 1980s, and will listen to these in my car on the way to and from work (as I did back then, except I was going back and forth to and from high school too) until they get scratched up and then I'll throw them in the garbage.

I think this format still has some utility!

Got AC/DC Back in Black last week at Reckless for my brother and Elton John's Madman Across the Water for myself.

Zonoscope by Cut Copy, around the time that Zonoscope came out.

I've largely abandoned cd buying, but I still have them lying all around my house and in my car cd player. I like burning them for friends every once in a while too.

Lodger & Here and Nowhere Else.

I haven't stopped purchasing compact discs and I imagine I won't until the last Reckless closes its doors.

I feel compelled to buy CDs of albums I like if they are cheap (even if I already own them). Usually end up giving them to mates. I bought these three a few weeks ago from Lucky Seven in Stoke Newington:

The Panther Tracks I will keep because not all the tracks are available on vinyl.

The Weezer I will give to my nephew.

The Melvins Vs. Minneapolis (2xCD) I already own so this copy will go to Oxfam in Ealing. They price their stuff off discogs so they should be able to make quite a profit on the £2 I picked it up for!!!

Honestly can't recall the last compact disc I bought. It's been a couple years. I suppose at least one of my recent LP purchases included a CD, but that doesn't count.

Seems like we missed it. But I still want to carry a box of them to Reckless to see if they're worth even a few pennies each, just to free up space. Feels weird to throw them out or just give them away for absolutely nothing.

I have a handful of rare discs that are probably worth ebaying or something.

New releases aside, I can get pretty much any album I want for $1-$4 at Reckless so why would I give Apple $10?

At this point you're just paying Apple to save the trouble of ripping & uploading or finding an illegal download. Which, if you're a busy person with disposable income, is probably worth it.

I sell them all the time on half.com, anywhere between $1 and $7, not as many on the upper end as you might hope but more than you might expect.

I realize this isn't worth most people's time but I'm just saying.

My mother does this all the time and does nearly as well on rare CDs as rare books - somebody out there wants them. But then she's a garage/estate sale troller and is getting economy of scale that may not be practical for most people.

I've thought about carrying a box full to the eBay store up the road, but I'm not convinced they know what to make of a limited edition Hemophiliac 2 CD set signed by John Zorn, Mike Patton & Ikue Mori. Probably best to stick with gaudy sneakers.

when i bought The Knife's "Shaking The Habitual" on vinyl last year they sent cd's of the album along with it in the packaging. i thought that strange, instead of download codes like most artists.

i think Neko's last album did the same thing, so i guess i have both of those on cd.

    before those 2? no idea.

Do any of you sell on Discogs? Thinking about getting rid of CDs I no longer listen to in there.

I've thought about selling shit on there many times! Bought a few things, too. I get e-mails about Fushitsusha records going on sale for way the fuck too much money on a regular basis. I guess I made some wishlist thing, at some point.

Anyway, that doesn't help at all. I'm sorry. I have purchased CDs on there, so there's at least one bozo to whom you could possibly sell shit.

I don't buy cds any more but I kind of like the idea of stumbling upon someone who's selling their entire collection in a bundle. Not sure why, it would just take up unnecessary space.
