You need to tell me more about how they formulate these rankings.

It's done in a similar way to ELO rankings are used in chess.

Based on the rankings today, a list by Pitchfork would expect to see Kid A above Discovery. If that wasn't the case, it would be the equivalent of an upset in chess and the points each album has would be changed and the rankings could do as well.

This elimantes the bias of including a best of list from 1993 that couldn't have those two albums on and also from only including new lists (like end of year).

So every album in a list below Kid A is considered to have been beaten by it as if it was an indivual chess mathc. All this shakes out and you end up with a ranking.

The sites owner had updated it by putting more lists in to the points calculation.

Funeral has gone down a little, was mid 30s on last update in 2010.

More upset at The Suburbs being higher than Hounds of Love, Village Green Preservation Society, Cosmo's Factory and The Blueprint.

Nice to see marginal gains for Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme in the top 100. Is This It and Kid A doing well also.

“A few period pieces aside – it’s a long time since Spirit, Frank Zappa, Johnny Winter, Joe Cocker or Country Joe and the Fish featured in a generalist greatest albums list – it set a template for the pop canon that has remained largely untouched for more than 40 years, by adhering to certain rules.”

Cmon. This guy, wtf. Fucking lamenting Johnny winter/ country joe not being on a canon list? I’ve seen Zappa on canon lists...Most of the aforementioned don’t belong up on a high list imo

    1. The canon is based around rock music

Right, because they’re the “greatest rock albums” usually

    2. The canon is male

Most artists were, esp in the 70s when the alleged classic period of rock was going down

    3. The canon is measured by albums

    Duh

IN CLOSING, THIS ARTICLE IS JUST AS USELESS AS THE CANON ITSELF

For what it’s worth, I love Neutral Milk Hotel more than I love Nas, but I’d have to be a fool to claim their In the Aeroplane Over the Sea trumps Illmatic for “greatness”.

Yeah. I mean, I guess there's a certain argument for stepping outside your own experiences and preferences to boost work out of your comfort zone, particularly when you're a british white guy concerned about the underrepresentation of hip-hop in the canon, but this is the kind of "it's important because it's important" approach that keeps stuff like REM on these sorts of lists.

I think I somehow managed to misread his statement to say he thinks Aeroplane is better than Illmatic and I'm not rolling them so hard now I see what he actually said. Whoops

No instead he said that Illmatic is a better album than the only good album Neutral Milk Hotel ever made, but that he’s still likes the indie band better than the rapper.

i don't see anything wrong with someone trying to step outside their own experience and preferences to see the wider appeal of something. like any other type of music criticism, as long as you can articulate your perspective well you're contributing something.

Talking about The Canon here, not their physical being. Like if we need to re-evaluate music out of snobbery, maybe give GR his due

I thought the snobs always liked Cohen so I guess I missed the point of comparison, but I’m on board for a Rafferty reappraisal.

It’s about damn time the Humblebums got the respect they deserve.

True story:  I was Spotify-obsessed with Rafferty's "Right Down the Line" earlier this Summer, and it was rivaled only by Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" in terms of winning the honorary designation of Darkbloom Yacht Rock Revival Record of the Summer (in all fairness, the Supertramp is more Yacht Prog I suppose).
