from what i understand, the impetus behind Kovalchuk retiring is the amazing time he had at home in Russia with his family during the lockout

makes it all the more entertaining that a corpratist stan like Roenick would cry a river for the owners that destabilized their own league

He had 12 years $77 M left on his contract.   The owners are probably thrilled he walked.  It's always the fans who suffer.

I appreciate the effort, but why would Brass Bonanza be playing for a Datsyuk goal?

In related videogame news, the "new and improved NHL 94" addition to this year's EA hockey game has got me tempted to buy it...

I'm about as big a supporter of Estevez culture as there is out there, but even I gotta admit this is a dumb choice.

Elliotte Friedman wrote:“And, I wrote that whole big blog where, when the first request was made by Alfredsson, the Senators kind of just countered and it kind of muddied the waters. And I do believe that’s true, but after I wrote that blog, I got a call from somebody and they said to me, ‘You’re on the right track, but there’s one thing you left out.’ And I said, ‘Okay, what’s that?’ And they said, ‘I don’t know if the relationship between Melnyk and Barry, who’s Alfredsson’s agent, ever got better after the whole Dany Heatley thing,’ and they thought that maybe that kind of played a role in what happened. Now I can’t speak to that for sure, but it wouldn’t surprise me because I know Ottawa, especially Eugene, took the whole Heatley thing very personally. So, I think that may have started at the beginning and then when Alfredsson’s initial request was kind of taken to the side and Alfredsson got a little upset, I just think the ball started rolling down a hill and things got out of control.”

The Czechs coined a couple of words, eight or so decades ago, that might be of some use to anyone eager to take in a hockey game this week, now that the Stanley Cup playoffs are under way. Be advised that you probably will not hear these two words down at the rink, and that uttering them there may provoke funny looks, or worse. One is svejking, which has nothing to do with “checking.” It derives from the 1923 novel “The Fateful Adventures of the Good Soldier Svejk During the World War,” by Jaroslav Hasek, and refers to Svejk’s way of behaving witlessly in order to survive the absurdities (as well as the perils) of life as cannon fodder. The other useful word is “robot.” The writer Karel Capek introduced it in 1920, in his play “R.U.R.,” and it comes from the Czech word robota, meaning “compulsory labor, drudgery, servitude.”

Damn this thread runs deep... glad to see a hockey connection there that goes beyond swapping Halak for Hasek.

The New Yorker wrote:The shadow in Madison Square Garden this week, the Devil pulling Jagr duty, is a mucker from Massachusetts named Jay Pandolfo, an esteemed but more robot-oriented member of the brotherhood.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/blogger-hacked-reporting-senators-finances-dispute-eugene-melnyk-210553389.html

    This story is so crazy.

Yost looked into the phony links he was being sent, and traced the IP address back to a domain in the Ukraine. That alone isn't much. The Ukraine is apparently a "haven for hackers". But here's where it gets odd: according to Yost, a reverse IP search led him to an "aliveview.com.ua" domain with just one other real connection: Help Us Help The Children, a Ukrainian humanitarian organization for which Eugene Melnyk serves as the honourary director.

That may very well be completely coincidental. But it's a bizarre connection to make. Although maybe the culprit is just a clever hockey fan, like Angelina Jolie's character in Hackers?

Whoever is behind the alleged hacking, if the goal here is to shut down any talk of Ottawa's financial troubles (which seem quite real in light of the Ottawa Citizen's report that the Senators have lost $94 million under Melnyk), The Streisand Effect seems particularly apt. Rather than disappearing from the Internet, this story has found its way here. And here.

The Kovalchuk story was more funny than anything else, and obviously both sides had stuff to gain from his departure, so to hold a grudge against him is pretty dumb imo.

Except for now. Now I hate the guy.
