    Fraternities Empty Fraternities

Post by Nick Mon Oct 09, 2017 2:02 pm

I'm reading this fascinating but scary article in The Atlantic about the death of a student at Penn State and how disgusting frat life is on that campus.

The writer is connecting this incident to how horrible hazing is on campuses across the country and the willingness of fraternities and universities to look the other way.

While being the parent of a college age student is years away I'm having a panic attack reading this. I chose to not join a frat and spent my first couple years at school getting in fights with frat boys.

Does anyone here have the same sense of dread about shit like this?

If I am put into an authority position of any boys they will definitely be warned to stay away from frats, and any girl will be warned to stay away from frat parties.

I know about the incident at Penn State but haven't gotten around to The Atlantic article yet. I don't have children, but I do worry sometimes about my younger sister and I make sure she knows about things like this. She joined a sorority, which I'm actually all for because they seem like positive social defense mechanisms against the predatory frat douchebag culture. When sororities go to parties they are accountable for one another and most assaults and rapes at frat houses will happen to unaffiliated young girls (my ex-girlfriend told me a horrifying story about this almost happening to her at a frat).

My parents are oblivious and when confronted about these things will tread dangerously close to 'boys will be boys' apologism, which makes me lose my fucking mind. I completely ruined what was supposed to be an enjoyable dinner one night because of this.

Was this at DePaul? I never really even noticed the fraternities on campus. There was one dude in my freshman year dorm who joined some business frat and he was a fucking garbage human being. He did a lot of cocaine and was a manic depressive, which kind of made me pity him but he was mostly an asshole. I never fought him, mostly because I don't fight, but I definitely thought about it a few times back then.

Fraternities will never stop hazing, it is essential to their identity and it's amazing how people still talk about how they just need to be reformed or that you can just get them to, like, promise not to do it anymore.

This is just my opinion and I never had anything close to a enjoyable/meaningful college experience so w/e
