This is the answer to literally every question about this man that makes us tear our hair out. It definitely felt like it mattered in the beginning of October 2016. The only reason it didn't and doesn't is that enough people decided that doesn't matter.

i think many people have taken that idea to an extreme

and, let's be honest, sexual assault has not historically stood in the way of people gaining power. isn't that why we're in the historical moment we're in? because the norm since the beginning of time has been to take the things that powerful men do and sweep them under the rug, silence victims, and "move on".

given that heinous acts are dismissed in our own communities every day, it should be no surprise that they aren't enough to sway the electorate at large.

I think a dozen accusations pinned around the candidates actual voice describing sexual assault in the crudest terms a month from the election puts this particular sweeping aside harder to take.

But of course we're missing our own point here. When the tapes came out, I actually thought that, as bad as that was, there were scores of things about him that we're way worse. I thought it a bit ridiculous that after all that, this was the thing to bring him down, when of course the calculation should have been that anyone who stuck with him to that point was going to no matter what.

I mean, I know nothing the man does can have any negative implications for his hold on the White House, but if true this looks a lot like "treason," which Americans have historically tolerated a lot less than rape and assault.

Yeah, of course we can. It obviously isn't a secret that American military power will back Israeli interests regardless of human rights concerns but for a lot of Palestinians the importance of East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian nation is central to any meaningful two-state solution. The stalemated peace process was already effectively broken before this.

There have already been protests in Gaza, but the international response to this will probably be fairly muted. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is no longer the geo-political focus of most Arab governments. This is a pretty good article that explains some of the geo-political fragmentation of the Arab world over the last decade.

A side note issue but I was reading and listening to some of Thomas Friedman's coverage of Saudi Arabia in the New York Times and it is appalling. Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman is not a liberal reformer and suggesting as much should be grounds for his dismissal.
