What Car Do You Drive?
I've been working for an online car sales company for the last 18 months and have enjoyed learning about all things cars. Like many things I enjoy, I appreciate that cars are at the intersection of engineering/design/art/culture. My dad was a big car guy/flipper and enjoyed buying cheap old cars, working on them, then selling them. I was around them a fair amount as a kid, but was never truly interested. It has been exciting to connect with that passion for the first time as an adult.

Re: What Car Do You Drive?
I’ve only owned 1 car my entire life. It was a 1990 white Ford Probe and I loved that car so much. It got totaled when at a 4 way stop I pulled into the intersection and was smashed into by an older man that came flying through the stop and I was lucky to only have had some bruises and soreness.
I have no interest in cars though I appreciate them and have a particular affinity for late 60s Mustangs.
I currently lease all my cars. I have a GMC Acadia.

Re: What Car Do You Drive?
We have a black '14 Mazda Mazda3 hatchback (manual) and a grey '16 Mazda CX-5 (auto). My first car was a grey 1965 VW Beetle (manual) that my dad and I worked on together - he was a mechanic, focused on VWs. My second car was a tan 1980 Volvo 240DL (auto). I had that one and the Beetle in high school, both at the same time, which feels pretty extravagant. The first car my wife and I owned together was a black 1996 VW Golf GL (manual) and we bought my brother's silver 1999 VW Jetta (manual) when we needed a second car and he moved to NYC. Those last two cars seemed like they were in the repair shop all the damn time and I never felt confident in their roadworthiness.
I'm not a car person. I can get into some of the aesthetics of them - fr'instance, I have a real hard-on for 1970 Oldsmobile 442s and the sound of late 60s/early 70s Camaro engines - but I see them mostly as objects of utility and value reliability and their function as a mobile podcast listening device over just about any other feature. More and more, I feel frustrated at their existence; cars feels like an object freighted w/ a lot of the woes of injustice: capital inequality, the tyrannical privileging of speed over patience, and a disregard for ecological destruction. My next car will be an electric car, but we'll probably hold onto the ones we have for a good long while.

Re: What Car Do You Drive?
I would like something Japanese like a Ford Probe (90s coupe) to learn stick on, but prices have shot through the roof and I don't want to pay $10-15k. I want a 3rd gen Acura Integra or an AE86 Corolla, but they're just too valuable right now.
I've never owned an American car and only driven them a few times. I really hated the Ford Taurus as a kid and my family had all imports. An American classic would be cool as shit, but again I wouldn't want to spend big money. Late 60s V6 Mustangs are somewhat affordable if you just like cruising in a classic. I am into the esoteric, so a 60s Swedish car really appeals to me. Classic Volvos and Saabs are cool as hell.
Vlv, are you in the Bay Area or the Midwest these days? I forget. Do you feel like you need your AWD a lot?
I drove a 1998 Toyota Camry for many years and recently sold it for a tidy profit due to the surging used car market. I also have a 2002 BMW Z3 that has been beat to shit the last year while street parked. I just moved it into a garage at my new place, but I'm probably going to fix cosmetic stuff and sell it this year. I love BMWs, but this leaks oil like shit and I want to dump it instead of sinking money. BMWs are the main German cars I like, since my dad used to have a few old ones I would drive.
I also got a 2002 Toyota 4Runner last year and did a bunch of car camping and off-roading. I even went to Moab. The plan for this year is to sell my Z3 and keep my focus on my truck and seeing some amazing wilderness.

I still need to drive this. Michael and I talked on Instagram about a year ago about me driving stick before I got distracted and he moved to Portland

I want one of these with a stick. They're not a performance car by any means, but for a cool car with a stick they are still decently affordable. I think it would be fun to learn on one of those while deciding my next move. They were ubiquitous as a kid in the Bay Area.

Re: What Car Do You Drive?
'89 Buick LeSabre (rare alt model of this car, leather seats, good that opened backwards, solid ride, I loved this car)
'99 Ford Escort (previous car finally died, kind of got stuck with this and it became a huge money pit, just dropping thousands of dollars on it every year for like four years because I never had enough money to replace it with anything else... every Ford my family owned growing up was a piece of garbage so I shouldn't have been surprised by my experience with this one)
'99 Honda CR-V (this had like 150,000 miles on it when I got it and it served me pretty well for the three years I drove it)
'13 Honda Civic (bought this almost two years ago with like 3,000 miles on it, closest thing to a "new" car I've ever owned , now that I have it I realize that this model and color are really common and it feels less "special" than it did when I first bought it but it's nice to be driving a car that doesn't feel like it's on the verge of falling apart for the first time in my life)

Yeah. The turn signals on 90s Fords blink super fast and the sound was annoying as hell. It was so much faster than the Toyotas I was used to. Not sure why that fact sticks with me so much.
My dad also used to drive me to school in a 1965 El Camino with a bench seat and I hated that shit. I'd love one now, but I didn't grow up with any affinity for American cars at all.

never took the test, maybe one day. I enjoyed my lessons well enough but it's far from a necessity here unless you live in the countryside

Re: What Car Do You Drive?
I used to have a license around high school and start of college but it expired.
When I drove I had a maroon exterior maroon interior 1992 Toyota Camry LS. That car was fantastic, it had power windows, locks, seats, moon roof, etc.
I've only recently been feeling like I want a car again. I've been looking at Audi A4 Wagon (All-Road) which if I decided I want to drive again, this is prob what I'll get.

I know nothing about cars, didn't get my license till I was 18 and only because I was going to college and "I guess I should?", and a good 40% of what I love about city living is the not needing to own a car.

You live in a West Coast city though, which is a little different.

That makes perfect sense if you will yourself to the ignorance of the fact that Duff lives in Chicago - a city w/ one of the more robust public transit systems in the country - and you live in the East Bay, which apparently has something called BART that serves pretty much only the transbay upper working class.

Re: What Car Do You Drive?
Yeah, I am just pointing out that the transport infrastructure in West Coast cities is very different. It's pretty common for New Yorkers not to own a car whereas that is almost unthinkable in Los Angeles. A lot of East Coast urbanities with cars might not use it on a daily basis either. It is something that they use for trips out of the city, especially if you are wealthy enough to own multiple properties. Plus, there are actually things within driving distance of both West and East Coast cities that are actually worth visiting. We in the Midwest are starved for those attractions.

I get cha. And I am just pointing out that living in a city doesn't mean you have access to a useful public transit system that can get you everywhere you want to go. It's a frustrating experience for many urbanites.
Devon doesn't look too different from Marin County.

Yeah. There is nothing like that in the Midwest. We have Rockford though, which is probably like our version of Sunderland or something. Actually probably even worse.

Smart to lease. One of mine is a lease, but it made sense for me to own the CRV. It's a beast and will last for years once it's paid off. Leasing is great for teenagers.
My friend Dan had a white 69 Mustang when I was a kid: fucking awesome.

Didn't mean to suggest this was a universal experience, just mine.
Michigan and Wisconsin have some very pretty locations on the lake, though my spot I can get to on the Amtrak.

Re: What Car Do You Drive?
I have car buying fever again. I want to buy my first manual transmission car this year and wing it. I just texted a local guy about a BMW wagon that I like. Big fan of turn-of-the-millenium BMWs.
If you were going to buy a manual car right now, what would you get? How many people here can drive stick?

Re: What Car Do You Drive?
Do it. Turn of the millennium BMWs are rad. I drove a manual 1997 3 series convertible for a while and loved it. I’ve only ever owned stick shift cars. Driving makes me sleepy, and being forced to do dumb bullshit like change gears keeps me from falling asleep and murdering people. My history of cars:
1992 Eagle Summit
1997 BMW
2002 Audi TT (backwards British variety)
2006 Nissan Xterra (manual transmission was pretty rare for this one I think)
2002 Ford Focus (diesel euro spec)
Currently don’t own a car. Drive my GF’s 2000something Honda Civic whenever I need to go somewhere that isn’t work (which is pretty rare).
