Re: The Donald J. Trump Presidency
chrondog wrote:US presidential campaigns are the longest campaigns in the entire world. Why do we need more information about what Trump is like? Why does he need more time to "prove himself"? That shit is total hogwash and should be rejected by any thinking person.
I understand why elected officials like Obama, in the interest of democracy and peaceful transition of power, have to feign this line of thinking. But for anyone with common sense Trump has shown his true colors. Even if he occasionally has an appealing position, he's worse than scum.
Like I said [in the election] thread, he has no developed, consistent political ideology because he is not a thinker or interested in policy. He deserves zero credit for occasionally, accidentally touting a reformist message. He's just throwing shit against the wall.
This is why I think it is extremely important to try to raise the Bannon issue to the level of a full-on national crisis. There's already quite a bit of tension between Trump's stated wish to represent "all the people" and his obvious belief that he can do whatever he wants whenever he wants and it's no one's fucking business to make a peep about it other than to thank him or tell him how great he's making America again already. He's already bitching about unfairness, but he hires all the best people and he put a white supremacist in charge of "strategy". Turn up the heat on that, and either he dumps the guy or remains defiant. Either way he's weakened, isolated and humiliated.
If this country is to be expected to 'treat the office with the respect it deserves', it's going to have to wait until Mike Pence takes over before anyone gets a fucking millimeter of leeway to do things any differently than the way we demand they be done. Donald Trump set a clear example for how we are to respect the office and each other . If he thinks that's unfair, he can resign any time he wants. The sooner the better, imo. Let someone who actually wants to do the work have the job.

If I was to say that you should call/write your (Democratic) congressman if they're not on this list, would that be a productive effort or is those members' minds just made up and there's nothing anyone can do?
I know this thing isn't binding and might as well be an Internet petition but what else can be done?

Re: The Donald J. Trump Presidency
Petitions like that are totally ineffective and the Trump people will mock the hell out of it. Shit like that is an example of why HRC got crushed.
Dems use people like John Oliver or Samantha Bee to make fun of Trump and his supporters. Or pass useless petitions around to show disapproval for something. None of that actually expands their base or speaks to the frustrated middle class.

It never hurts to write your congress member. If our representatives aren't standing up to this appointment, what else will they roll over for?

I guess I agree with you but I don't think it's helpful to discourage anyone from getting more engaged than they already are in the political process by at least making some concerted effort to voice their political opinions through productive, non-violent means.Nick wrote:Petitions like that are totally ineffective and the Trump people will mock the hell out of it. It's really important that Democrats, or anyone who even loosely affiliates themselves with liberal or leftist politics, start developing a mature and earnest approach to political action.

Re: The Donald J. Trump Presidency
Also, tenuously related to the conversation about Citizens United, every Illinois boarder should be interested in this right now.
It was already passed in the Illinois State Senate and it is now moving to the House. Call your local House Representative. Nick, for you that should mean a call to Wehrli will be a part of your lunch experience tomorrow!!
This is the sort of small, local mobilization efforts that I intend to really take very seriously from now on.

The next Administration is basically calling for Muslim concentration camps. I just feel like online petitions are not going to be enough.
I don't have an answer or even a list of suggestions because I'm still processing how bad things are going to get. I joined Democratic Socialists of America. Don't know what my next step is but I know the current situation is fucking dire.

Re: The Donald J. Trump Presidency
I was reading something the other day about the most effective way to communicate with your congressman. This was the gist of it:
1- Call their local office
2- Call their office in DC
3- Write a letter
4- Send an e-mail

Well, obviously this thread made me check out True American Dog and... spoiler alert!... It hasn't been updated since last time it made my day. If the Trump presidency is defined by T.A.D. not making lots of posts, than you can mark my word, it'll be a super stupid presidency of shit.

The House failed to overturn Rauner's veto on automatic voters registration by four votes. Wanna take a guess how many seats Democrats lost in this election in the State House?Ҩ wrote:Also, tenuously related to the conversation about Citizens United, every Illinois boarder should be interested in this right now.

Re: The Donald J. Trump Presidency
I have a coworker who said she was voting Republican straight ticket (except for president) because (my paraphrasing) she wanted to stick it to Michael Madigan.
I think the anti-Madigan ads that were run this year really got through to voters. People who'd never heard of him or thought about him much just knew that he was the worst, the personification of Illinois corruption, and while 99% of people who saw these ads didn't live in his district and couldn't necessarily cast a ballot directly against him, they could vote against him by proxy in other races. So here we are!

Re: The Donald J. Trump Presidency
One of my friends was running for a state seat and was targeted by those very same ads. She didn't have billions of dollars to throw against them, though, and the damage was done. I'm certainly inclined to agree with your reading of the situation, but I'm admittedly a bit biased.

Re: The Donald J. Trump Presidency
I'm interested in the data on that. While watching in some cases identical ads about how so-in-so and what's-her-name were blind Madigan puppets I couldn't help but think, "Do people generally know who the fuck Mike Madigan is?"

Re: The Donald J. Trump Presidency
Could a case be made that this was just a response to Democrats doing the same to Republican candidates with Donald Trump?
Like, "[Candidate X] says he doesn't support Donald Trump, but [anecdote about him supporting something Donald Trump doesn't oppose/appearing at event for raising money for the party that might be funneled towards the Trump campaign, etc.]" (show black and white picture of Candidate X next to black and white picture of Trump)
I'm not above publicly shaming any and all Republicans for falling in line or even trying to be cagey about their support for Trump, I'm just saying that they probably saw what we were doing/about to do to them and just flipped the same tricks back at Democrats and in Illinois, it was probably a success.

I know that's textbook political advertising, I don't think I'm illuminating anything that wasn't completely obvious to everyone or anything like that.

I think mostly Rauner poured money into this election. The particular message probably didn't even matter. But I'm spitballing here too.

Look like Donald is pretty determined to fuck up the relationship between US and China, which economically is probably pretty goddamned stupid.
