Re: [solved]Hockey Talk
So, 50ish games, possible extended playoffs. 5 against each conference rival is what it sounded like reading up on this.
Happy Hawks have healthy Hossa. That's one positive side to all this nonsense I guess.

Sucks that Cowen is injured.
I wonder if it will be worth getting Game Center again.

Re: [solved]Hockey Talk
Great news. My roommate is a big Hawks fan so he will be ecstatic and this which will lure me into watching probably like 85% of the Hawks games this year. WIll be a good way to fill my downtime in college, drink beer, and get excited about something.
Hopefully by the end of this season I can make meaningful contributions to this thread. But for now just, Go Hawks!

Sounds like quite a solid adjustment to college dorm life right there.

Can all the players who left to play in Europe come back now? How many people ended up doing that?

Re: [solved]Hockey Talk
Apparently as of November, 170 or so players had gone to Europe or the KHL (wiki). I don't really know for sure, but I imagine these guys who were already under contract in the NHL had opt out clauses with their temporary contracts. Then you have the young NHL experienced guys who were able to go down and play at the AHL level. Seems like the biggest effect would be with European/KHL/AHL players on the bubble who temporarily lost their spots. Now I guess they all get called back up?
Anyway I'm just glad we get to see some hockey.

Re: [solved]Hockey Talk
Shouldn't they make every season ~50 games? Seems a bit much to stretch beyond that.

Re: [solved]Hockey Talk
I guess you could make that argument. What I'm curious about is how this schedule is going to pan out games per week wise... hope that doesn't have too negative an impact on player injuries.

I mean unless the orcs can play a very physical game and really get into the elves' heads, I think the elves have this one.

Re: [solved]Hockey Talk
fucking perfect, that thread. I feel like goaltending is something designed specifically for the race of dwarves. Like, they could rack up a bunch of wins a la St Louis last year based just on that, but could they top a quality playoff team featuring the best skating forwards and defencemen of elves and men in a best of 7?
also lol

Re: [solved]Hockey Talk
I feel like the Swedes are basically already elves? And the Russians are maybe orcs.
A big enough dwarf could just park it in front of the net and they'd probably play like the Rangers (the team not Strider from LoTR) but the orcs would just crash into the crease elves are snipers so they'd just pile on shots on goal and probably put enough onto the top shelf to win it.

Re: [solved]Hockey Talk
I'd definitely watch a hockey themed installation in this film franchise, that's for damn sure. Like, get Estevez and Kurt Russell to play the coaches of Rivendell and Gondor respectively and they could have this big rivalry, but after Russell's men get knocked out of the tourney by Isenguard he can help Emilio crack Sauraman's strategy and beat the Orcs.
I really don't think Hobbits can excel in these types of sports against large middle earth beings. Like, even the most physically stacked Tooks from throughout the ages on a hobbit dream team would still be dwarved (lol) by any other team they'd run up again.

Re: [solved]Hockey Talk
I was thinking the wizards were left out for fairness, and the ent probably can't skate.
But if the laws allowed I think an orc-coached team of uruk-hai would be a real contender.

Re: [solved]Hockey Talk
I imagined the wizards in play, but only in coaching roles...
orc discipline would crush it for sure, just depends on where the leadership is coming from. Wizards >>> UH >>> standard dumb orc.
I figure goblins are to orcs as hobbits are to men and they'd just end up being like the columbus blue jackets of middle earth.

Re: [solved]Hockey Talk
Not sure if I'd cast him as a hobbit or an elf, but Pat Kane wouldn't look out of place in one of these Jackson films.
