    Slowdive Empty Slowdive

Post by undo Mon Aug 29, 2016 9:16 pm

We have never had a Slowdive thread on this board, so I would like it if people would find old LOPP2 posts about Slowdive and repost them here. I remember some good posts about them but I don't know how to find them now.

Or just to talk about Slowdive if U want.

I am listening to Pygmalion now and U can imagine how I might feel right now if I'm listening to this 4 the first time?

I actually took this whole band 4 granted and never really listened to them before now and I don't know why.

The only Slowdive album I truly love. I'm jealous.

Pygmalion sounds like a different band than the other ones, and isn't really even a "band" most of the time, anyway. Their presence is just enough, though, and is part of why the tracks have way more going 4 them than the glut of "ambient layered loops type music."

Souvlaki seems to be most people's favorite and is the album 4 which they R most remembered. I'm sort of curious as to how it would sound to me now but not enough to listen to it again. I've actually encountered people irl who claim to love this band and when I say that I've mostly gotten into Pygmalion they don't know what the hell I'm even talking about.

I think this did come up on this board at some point and is probably buried in some thread.

I need to listen 2Pygmalion again.  It's always compared to SeeFeel and AR Kane/ Disco Inferno and seems to be regarded as some sort of ambient/post-rock masterpiece, but the few times I've listened to it, it really really bored me.

I still love Souvlaki.  They really nail this druggy, gauzy, Velvet Underground goes to space kind of vibe on that record.

They've also got a lot of cool EP's and 12".  Check out "Moussaka Chaos" from the Outside Your Room EP 4 another anomalous contribution in their ouvre.

I guess this will be one of those bands that I start from the end and go backwards with even thought Slowdive is probably one of those bands that nearly everyone approaches in the order that they actually put stuff out in.

This is my favorite thing I've ever heard from them and it's annoying that I'll probably have to buy the Slowdive anthology compilation if I want to own it but I guess I should be happy that it's even on there. I heard it on this really great mix a while back and it's stuck with me ever since.

Never listened to this band before either, I'm giving Pygmalion a listen now. Will formulate an actual opinion later.

Be sure to give Souvlaki a try as well. That's really their best overall piece of music, IMO, and it's not really close.

Yeah, this has been my experience with literally every Slowdive fan I've encountered. One of them even took it as a personal slight, he thought that I was going out of my way to be condescending about the fact that I prefer an album he hasn't heard. The real world isn't elite enough 4 my taste.

I have fond memories of those recordings. I remember loaning out my "just 4 a day" cd to a girl I had a crush on in college. J f a d is my favorite but it was my first album of theirs I got, and played it over and over in high school. Pygmalion and souvlaki have highs as well...I can C anyone preferring one album over the other easily.

I almost bought a Yamaha effect pedal that is basically the slow dive fx pedal. It's s cheap find on eBay.

I love "ask me tomorrow" by Mohave 3 more than the slow dive albums truthfully. Idk maybe not lol but it's great. The other m3 albums bored me.

Saw some guy in target wearing a slow dive shirt the other day. Thought about being "nice shirt" but now that I am in my 30s that shit doesn't matter to me anymore lol

I'm typically into boring music that doesn't really do much, but I found this Pygmalion album quite boring in a way I wasn't into. But maybe one day I'll try again.

Pygmalion IS boring. But give Souvlaki a try.

The only Slowdive song which I ever find myself wanting to spin is "Blue Skied an' Clear," and I find myself wanting to spin it every couple of months.

I love their version of Some Velvet Morning. I have a tape player in my car and recently found an old tape with this song and a bunch of other shoegaze. May have been the last tape I ever made, tbh.

Reading this portion of your post immediately after reading undo's long post in the Trump thread is like a convergence of crazy feelings that the world is fucked and the simpler times are gone forever.

I'm wary of trying to express an opinion about this album because I think being so highly rated has built up all kinds of expectations about it that might not be fair. And I think I owe it more than a 4 or 5 listens before saying anything about it (like anyone cares but you know). Or I could just do that but don't say I didn't warn you.

Jim Derogatis says about Loveless, "you listen to this album and you feel high!" But tell me, has he ever heard this?

Basically, so far I am enjoying all the bonus tracks on this more than the album itself.

I've now listened to their 2017 comeback album more than anything else this year. I love it so much and can't wait to see them live later this year.
