Is this brand really our friend?

It’s very bad to drink. Your body will truly suffer!

I've had one of these drinks and it was an awful experience. But this article is pretty damn good, so I guess I can live with Red Bull.

They have a YouTube channel and interview some really good artists, for like an hour and a half. The interviews are generally poor but it’s great to meet some of these artists up close

Wikipedia wrote:The Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) is a world-traveling series of music workshops and festivals, founded in 1998 by Red Bull.[1] The main five-week event is held in a different city each year. The public portion of its program is a festival of concerts, art installations, club nights and lectures by influential figures in contemporary music.[2] The other part of the program is by invitation only, held in a building which has been custom-fitted with a large recording studio, a lecture hall, a radio booth and between eight and twelve bedroom-sized studios.[3] There, 60 up and coming producers, singers, sound artists, DJs and musicians from around the world learn from and collaborate with top industry professionals.[4]

Give me five whole weeks of this and I'd wish I was never born

Pretty sure that some of that shit went on in Chicago, last year.  It ran for like a month and featured zero acts worthy of seeing.  I think it was called 30 Days of Red Bull or something like that.  I don't recall any lectures or whatever, so I don't think it was the "main" event.

I saw Andy Stott a few years ago and it was sponsored by Red Bull Music Academy. It was a weirdly clashing aesthetic.

This article is old but hits on some of the pros and cons of these companies in music: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2011/aug/10/music-patronage-our-generous-benefactors

I'm generally OK with this kind of sponsoring and branding, with some healthy skepticism. I've been to many RB-sponsored events that were quite good, and the list of artists who have benefited from their exposure is extensive. I do think there's also value in the various industry-skeptic or outright oppositional approaches (whether it be the uncompromised indie model of something like Fugazi or the anarch situationalism of KLF) but I don't see those models scaling up to the degree where they can replace market-oriented approaches of one kind or another for most artists.

WP64 wrote:I would have thought they would be patrons for like Warped Tour (rip) or some shit like that.
They've been involved with dance music for like 20 years so someone like Andy Stott is right in their wheelhouse. Probably helps to keep in mind that Red Bull is a European brand. We Americans tend to think of dance/electronic as inherently niche or underground but in much of the world dance music is much closer to mass market than something like Warped Tour is/was.

I don't know how many of these I would hit given my sporadic live music attendance, but I do think it's cool that they're specifically curating Latinx and gay music. Most festival lineups seem to be very conservative (I mean in the risk-taking sense, not the political sense, although maybe that's true as well).

Missing the real point of this thread entirely, I just gotta say that red bull is utterly disgusting. I'd rather drink literally any other thing on earth.
