I was in Reckless on Broadway and they were playing the Gin Blossoms. The guys voice was familiar, but I couldn't place it until Hey Jealousy kicked in. Good record!

Re: Recently heard in public places
I have this shitty full time warehouse job that I'm working right now. I basically just do the same repetitive and soulless tasks from 7am until 3:30pm every fucking weekday now. The only redeeming aspect are the tunes. I'm the only white dude in the warehouse, other than random foremen/supervisors that just patrol around pretending to be busy and so I am on a steady diet of soul, r&b, and funk.
Today we were listening to a playlist of D'Angelo, Prince, Parliament/Funkadelic, etc. when my boss demanded that the music be changed to something more appropriate because people were coming to tour the facility. We ended up listening to fucking country music for three hours.
I've never actually listening to popular/contemporary country music but that shit is aggressively awful. The post-production during the chorus always adds the sounds of a bunch of hooting and hollering good old boys and it actually kind of frightens me.

Country music is the furthest fucking thing from "appropriate".

I am in a doctor's office waiting room and they're playing a Sirius XM station that is literally nothing but commercials for Sirius XM. They just play in a 10-minute long loop.

Re: Recently heard in public places
While waiting for a burger, this evening, I heard "Michelle," "Misery," "Mr. Kite," "Why Don't We Do It in the Road," "Mr. Moonlight," and "Hey Jude." The burger was nearly as good as the music, too, so this post probably belongs in "Crushing It," now that I think about it.

The chances of hearing two Better Than Ezra songs in one's life aren't particularly great in 2018.

Do they still always play Better Than Ezra at the UC before Bulls games? That was a staple for at least 15 years.

Re: Recently heard in public places
Every Bulls game I attended from 1995 to 2011 featured "Good" in the pregame warm-up music. No exceptions. That's all the information I have. I haven't been to a game in a long time, it seems. Heard it in the background on television pregame broadcasts more times than I can count, but I can't specifically recall having heard it since 2014 or 2015. That was the last time I had cable.

Re: Recently heard in public places
Hearing these songs back to back at Meatheads (Illinois-based fast casual artesain hamburger chain) gave me pause to think that maybe we're really not living in the golden age of pop music like everyone says we are.

I don't have Spotify right now so I have no idea if this link works or not, but this really blew my mind at the Coldstone Creamery.

Re: Recently heard in public places
Binny’s Beverage Depot used to play WXRT in all their stores but they’ve switched to some generic playlist of Chicago, Billy Joel, The Doobie Brothers and Rod Stewart.
I know I’m a target market but I always liked hearing Wilco or The Clash or Tame Impala while shopping for my craft beer, it felt like an inside joke I was sharing with the universe Itself. Now I feel like some fat 60 year old in an ill-fitting white polo shirt (with a MAGA hat in the backseat of my car that I’m too scared to cover my combover with anymore).

This world of bullshit was literally all that Paste Magazine had left to call their own and Pitchfork still straight up stole it right out of their hands.
