Knew both of the local guys in this article back in the day. The dude with the badass shirt and stache wrestled in the same conference as me, but I don't think we ever faced off head to head. As I recall, he was pretty good.

i was wondering if you'd had any dealings with Guida.

its only the inherent wrestling bias in mma judging that gave him a win in that fight; gets out-struck for one third of the fight and spends the other two thirds desperately clinging to top position/narrowly avoiding submissions. people love his shtick but if you take away the adhd routine and tasmanian devil aesthetic you're left with a deeply average fighter.

Mike Russow, the other Chicago dude on the card, ended up getting TKO'd because he blew his wad trying to finish in the first round. he's any incredibly durable and flabby cop - not the kind of man you'd like to steal a donut from.

    highlights of that card were:

TJ Grant elbowing "Handsome" Matt Wiman into the 'seeking a new nickname' ranks:

    fighting, etc Jkhgjh-o

and Anthony Pettis incorporating another off-the-cage strike:

    fighting, etc Anthony-pettis-matrix-knee-slow-motion

was walking through Bethnal Green today and I noticed this place in Paradise Row...

    fighting, etc Daniel-Mendoza-3-Paradise-Row

    fighting, etc Daniel-Mendoza-Blue-Plaque2

    fascinating dude:

wiki wrote:Before Mendoza, boxers generally stood still and merely swapped punches. Mendoza's style consisted of more than simply battering opponents into submission; his "scientific style" included much defensive movement. He developed an entirely new style of boxing, incorporating defensive strategies, such as what he called “side-stepping”, moving around, ducking, blocking, and, all in all, avoiding punches. At the time, this was revolutionary, and Mendoza was able to overcome much heavier opponents as a result of this new style. Though he stood only 5 feet 7 inches (170 cm) and weighed only 160 pounds (73 kg), Mendoza was England's sixteenth Heavyweight Champion from 1792 to 1795, and is the only middleweight to ever win the Heavyweight Championship of the World. In 1789 he opened his own boxing academy and published the book The Art of Boxing on modern "scientific" style boxing which every subsequent boxer learned from.

Mendoza helped transform the popular English stereotype of a Jew from a weak, defenceless person into someone deserving of respect. He is said to have been the first Jew to talk to the King, George III. Mendoza was second for Tom Molineaux, a freed Virginia slave, in his fights.

Guy's a bit over the top with his "all boxers >>> MMA fighters" shtick, but still a pretty decent take:

Id describe it as a pretty bad take.

As overated as Rousey is, a coach with one iota of strategic nouse will be able to put together a gameplan in which an Olympic judoka is able to exploit the chinks in Holm's takedown defence. If Edmond Tarverdyan coached Ronda for 100 fights against Holm and told her to chase her round the cage getting punched in the face then she would probably lose most of those contests. If she was instructed to weather the striking advantage by actually attempting some defence whilst calmly persuing the takedown, I think quite a few of those 100 contests would go the other way.

As for the "all boxers would destroy all MMA fighters" arguement...they would...at boxing. However, if they're trying to do it off their backs, it wouldn't go so well. We've seen that, its called UFC 1.

What history shows us is that 100% of pure boxers lose MMA fights. As soon as they have done enough training to practice effective takedown defence they are, by definition, mixed martial artists.

Those are all solid points, and I don't disagree. I guess the part of that article I most agreed with was in the headline itself. After something like 12 fights against meh opponents, folks were calling her greatest female athlete on the planet. Just seemed ridiculous.

Folks will say any old shit to flog a fight. Not unlike clickbait writers.

The funniest bit of that article is that champion boxers would do exactly what Holly did.

What? Train MMA for 8 years, do it pro for 4, win a kickboxing title and secure victory with a head kick?
