My knee has felt so good the past 2 weeks! Hoping to log a bunch of miles this summer after having to shut it down the past 8 months.

Re: Running
I've been running for about a month now after having been a smoker for 12 years. I'm running about 3 miles on average with a 8:30 mile. Shit feels great but even a two day slip can kill my whole momentum.

Fuck yeah dude. Been hitting the road pretty hard myself lately and so far all the joints feeling good. Gonna try to log some high mileage in the summer sunshine with these new Mizunos.

Re: Running
In order to boost attendance for our command sponsored 5k this Friday, my boss sent out an email to all the spec ops/airborne/seal fuckers bragging that we would take 1st and 2nd place against all challengers. He's relying on me here, and I'm not even that fast. And 5k is certainly not my preferred distance.
God dammit.

I broke 20 minutes in a 5k for the first time this past weekend. Pretty pleased with myself.

Re: Running
yo Ned you gonna win this race or what.
get out this morning and do 6-8x 70m sprints at 80% or so of peak speed. get comfortable with that turnover in case you need to outkick one of those jackholes.
in a bout of idiocy i registered for and got selected in the entry lottery for a 40 mile race at the end of february. so theres that.

Re: Running
There's a guy in my squadron (presumed 1st place guy) who used to flirt with a 4 min mile and who recently qualified for Boston with a time of 2:45. So winning for me basically means taking second in this case. Still gonna be a tough one, as I'm sure there will be some legit runners turning out. I'll try to take your advice, though I'm pretty busy all day. Went for a nice 8 mile run yesterday and made sure to run through the race route on the way.
Subnote: apparently I'm also supposed to dress like a pirate for some reason. I guess I should try to dig through the box of old Haloween costumes later. Skull & crossbones bandana and eyepatch is probably the max I'm going to do. If I weren't worried about running fast, it'd be pretty funny to try to get through the race on a peg leg.

I hope the 40-miler isn't in Chicago?

Re: Running
Man... 40 miles. Ouch. What's the longest run you've done? I did a couple marathons and they destroyed me. I can't imagine putting my body through 40. Good luck. Throwing a slice of pizza your way to boost the calorie intake.

Re: Running
it's in NC, thankfully.
i've finished 14 marathons, but haven't tried one in 3 years or so. when running relatively fast for a specific goal time i've discovered i'm only good for about 19-20 miles. when running just to finish the distance at something i'd call "relaxed" i haven't had many issues, so hopefully this event falls in the latter category.
i'm most looking forward to ramping up my calorie intake this winter and just eating all kinds of delicious shit in massive quantities.

Re: Running
I did the Chicago 50k once. It was awful. At least during the marathon there is a good crowd out cheering you on and it's a nice way to see different parts of the city. The 50k was just a joyless ~10 mile loop on the lakefront path done three times in the early morning and in chilling silence.

Re: Running
that sounds awful. if this course were loops i wouldn't attempt it, thankfully it's out & back. so even if I give up I still have to get back to the start anyway, so i might as well keep going. how did your body hold up for the last loop?
a good part of it is on trails. i've done trail marathons, and the constant variation seems to take my mind off the fact that i'm running for hours and hours.

Re: Running
When I've run marathons in the past I always am aiming for a specific time but my body always completely falls apart during the last 5-6 miles. I was fine during the 50k because I was doing it at a relaxed pace and didn't have any goals other than finishing. I think I would do a 10 mile loop and hang out at a beverage/snack table eating pretzels and Oreos while chatting with race volunteers for a few minutes.
