I have a memory of a video of Joe Biden doing shit while some Biggie track played in the background. It might have been on the Daily Show a long time ago? I really can't remember. I keep trying strange Google searches to find it. Anyone know what I am talking about?

http://crooksandliars.com/2016/12/senate-democrats-have-one-shot-saving
On January 3, 2017, Democrats will hold the majority in the Senate for a few minutes, until the newly-elected Senators are sworn in. Biden could convene the Senate in those few minutes and call for a vote. The majority could then suspend the rules and vote in Merrick Garland.
The key here is that VP Biden would have to be willing to convene the Senate and recognize Senator Dick Durbin instead of Mitch McConnell. Durbin moves to re-nominate Garland, and Senate Democrats then vote to confirm him. They will have a quorum for those few minutes.
It's bold. Garland would be confirmed by 34 Democrats and no Republicans. It will certainly enrage Republicans, but they're already enraged and full of hubris about how they're going to screw Democrats anyway, so what do they really have to lose?
Not much. It takes courage. It takes a resolve to do what's right for this country, to reclaim the Supreme Court nomination Republicans think they stole from us. It takes backbone.
Here's where the rubber meets the road. We're not talking about "comity" anymore. We're talking about conviction and confirmation.

For what I thought were the same reasons as everyone else here.chrondog wrote:Why?
But now I'm staring down the possibility that the consensus around him here is not what I always thought it was and it's a very disillusioning experience.
I thought we was well liked, maybe even loved, but no everyone here was just trying to make a meme out of him? Or is this some kind of Louis CK "I always thought he sucked" kind of take?
I never thought he was going to be our savior, but now he's Tim Kaine?

he is well liked because he was the Vice President, a job which people do not seem to take seriously or expect much from. he has become a living meme. people like the character of "Vice President Joe Biden" and his funny aviators and faces. the Violence Against Women Act was cool. he was a decent presidential candidate. i "like him" in the general sense.
but he's always been a moderate Democrat. never strong on social issues. was the guy that talked about the "three state solution in Iraq". has a tendency to pander to the middle. he was picked as VP by Obama because he was white, old, and establishment. politically, i've never been terribly excited about him.
he's decent for a moderate Senator from the Northeast, but the post-election hot takes about how he should've ran, how he's streets ahead of Hillary, how he's such an honest and genuine Joe are silly. he has a tendency to put his foot in his mouth and nothing new to offer policy wise. we know what he is and it's not exciting.
i truly think that he's treated with kid gloves because he was such a fun meme during the Obama presidency. now the uncritical 2020 talk has started already. it's because he isn't in a position where he has to make real decisions or do anything that matters that people look at him with rose-tinted glasses. he would crumble if he got out on the campaign trail again.
also, i never thought Louis CK "always sucked", just that i haven't enjoyed him for several years now. i think some of his older standup and television work is brilliant. he was an incredibly funny comedian in a particular moment in time that eventually passed him by, imo.
further, i think Tim Kaine is fine! he's equally as fine as Joe Biden. which is to say he's a pandering conservative Democrat who i won't get excited about! but i can appreciate their work on the blue side of the aisle in less liberal parts of the country.
Hillary is also a pandering East Coast Democrat, but she is more progressive than both of them put together, i think. it is fair to disagree there.

I just am fundamentally opposed to anyone actively endorsing JB Pritzker for Governor and not Ocasio-Cortez for Congress. Sometimes, when I am just walking around the streets of Chicago, the full weight and historical importance of his Presidency really hits me. There is always going to be some part of me that will respect Obama, but in the end he was a largely ineffective President, and, more importantly, I am fundamentally opposed to his solutions and prescriptions.
Most importantly though, I think the inevitable lionization of him as a liberal champion is going to stand ing the way of the necessary progressive reforms that young socialists are envisioning for this country. Over time, I expect that will erode any remaining fondness I have for both him as well as the eight years in which he was President.
