Yeah, I don't really know. I'm just kind of confused and pissed off by that guys question and total false elitism.

Re: footwork
You probably shouldn't work in a record store.
I went to Reckless a few times last year and never found any Chicago footwork releases for sale.

Re: footwork
I'm commenting less on what records they have in stock and more on the exclusionary mindset that seems to permeate through dance music communities.

Re: footwork
It's not that dude... They're a store for DJ's for the most part. They specialize in 12" releases, especially from Midwestern DJs, they aren't gonna jump on every trend just because pitchfork gives something a high score. To get a job in places like that you need to know people and take part in the 'scene' in some fashion. Do you DJ? Do you goto clubs or loft parties often? Are you a tastemaker? Since your answer to these 3 questions is prob no, you have to imagine the guy just made you as a wannabe. They prob get a lot of dudes like you all the time and the guy you talked to is prob a dick plus annoyed by the constant inquiries.

Yeah, if you have to think about whether or not you're in that club, you absolutely certainly aren't.
I'm not saying it's a club you should want to be in.

Re: footwork
Word. I dig this actually and am not really offended that he would question my credentials. It just seems like a bizarre store to me because the walls and storefront showcase Hyperdub and Actress releases but you go inside and it becomes chaotic and impossible.BGwaves wrote:It's not that dude... I've always been envious of people back in the SOMB days who used to trot down to their local record store, spend a bunch of time digging around, and come out with a couple albums worth spinning in the evening. I'd love to establish that relationship with music again and I feel like a store like this should be a fun and active means to accomplishing that. Unfortunately I get painted as a faggot wannabe within a couple minutes to stepping through the front entrance.
Guess I'm just stuck in Reckless Records forever.

Re: footwork
It's also just annoying and confusing because getting into 'dance' music is the last serious period of music listening I've had in my life and that started like three years ago. As I lost track of what the fuck is happening with that I end up just trying to get into another Bob Dylan phase again or something.
Everything about bumping tunes seems forced lately. Whatever though. I'll stop derailing this thread for now.

if you're just trying to say that the "dance music community" seems like it's full of pricks, I think that's ok.

Re: footwork
Sometimes it seems like it could be really cool. Most of the time it doesn't. I wouldn't think that I'd come into contact with the uncool, prick-y parts at my local record store from some balding, fat, self-proclaimed tastemaking piece of shit. Basically.

Re: footwork
idk looking at gramophone's website, it seems like it's full of pure win
and from the little i know of the dance community here, most people are not really entitled to whatever music they like, they just wanna have a good time and all. as for dance music djs i dont frequent any but many of them do seem like serious dicks

Re: footwork
I still can't believe this is something that I get the pleasure of listening to whenever I want. I was on a bus in SF one morning and these dudes were bumping some reggae tracks off their phones that I was digging. Some fuck head standing next to me told me that he wished he could play some classical music composers piece (the names of which I forgot because I don't give a shit) so that he could laugh at people's reactions. I didn't respond but had the immediate urge to strangle the life out of him.jasperness wrote:pretty phenomenal stuff here
I'M ON THE TRAIN!
When I got back to the apartment and told my friend about it he went to his college's page and immediately located a picture of the guy. This fuckhead's snobbery affords him a well-paying job at an accredited university. Any dude who is that off-base should be forced into perpetual job displacement and poverty.
Less than 24 hours ago I pointed out that I don't get into arguments about music (and that is mostly true). But I can't stand music snobbery and anyone who can't down to the ass shaking grooves in this thread is a fucking nitwit.

The whole set is pretty alright. But can you guys all please check out the dude in the top left corner starting at the 9:40 mark. And then just take note of what happens to that dude's sensory motor skills from 9:52 until 10:15. The footwork made that white guy go full retard.

Re: footwork
I've been pretty heartbroken about this over the past few days. A friend told me about it Saturday night and it really hasn't fully sunk in for me. Both of his last two full lengths and his Rollin EP were some of the best music I have listened to in this decade. The guy was absolutely on the top of his game and it is disappointing, to say the least, that we aren't going to see where else his music was going to take us all. Also very sad that he leaves behind a nine year old son.
The subaltern spoke for a while and it said, "We so Teklife!"
I've been going through some of his records and here are some of my favorite tracks, discarding the obvious stellar jams that have already been posted on this thread:
A pretty awesome showcasing of his percussive brilliance. And when that sample seeps into the foreground at about 1:20….damn.
One of the more melancholic tracks I've heard from this dude.
RIP man.

Kinda surprised it's been covered with the prominence it has here. Which isn't to say, y'know, prominent, but.Bruegel wrote:i heard about this just before going to bed
