Final installment on Tuesday. Heckuva run, Tom. *raises glass*

I haven't been even a monthly listener for at least a year, but we'll always have the archives, and the BS Gems podcast.

My daughter used to go to preschool with a kid whose dad is in 3 bands with Jon Wurster, so at least he'll stay busy for the time being.

I admit I've been underwhelmed by Scharpling and Wurster's scripted material.

Some interesting background here (including Tom's likely role in the political shift from "You're with us or against us" to, like, Elizabeth Warren) which is where I first heard the news:

    Why are they quitting?

Read about this a few days ago and wanted to post in the thread about it but then I rememembered that was on the old board.

Well, it's a "he" that's quitting. But money seems to be the motivating factor.

Tom says he's not done, just can't do it for free on wfmu anymore. I don't think there's a concrete plan going forward though.

Can someone summarize why it is such a thing with people?

Mainly that it was funny.  Specifically, over the years, he created a universe that included both 'the real world' - stories from his daily life, pop culture esoteria, and since the show was mostly an open-phones call in talk show, contributions from the listening audience - and the fictional town of Newbridge, NJ, which was populated by Tom and hundreds of crazy characters played by Jon Wurster who called in just about every week.  It was self-referential, but not douchey, so I don't think it would be completely incomprehensible to someone who might start listening next month when it starts up again.
I don't know if I can point to any one thing as the quintessential Best Show bit, but I like this one alot:

And Rock Rot and Rule is the genesis of the whole thing:

He also played good music and as time went on, had more and more good guests.

If it weren't for this board I never would have heard this, I'm in your Band or Barry from Watford's minty biscuit phone call. And each one of those felt stepping into a new world.

I'm listening to this for the first time and am starting with the earliest episode available on WFMU.org which is called Yankees vs. Mets!

Is this for real or staged because it is totally hilarious and cannot believe it is real. I am dying at my desk right now.

Just got tickets to the Scharpling & Wurster show at Lincoln Hall in March today.

Listening to an archived show from 2003 when Philly Boy Roy challenges Tom to a dancing contest but with knives.

He told Tom, "I'm going to stab you in the heart and dance on your corpse." Amazing stuff on a Friday morning.

Listening to the installment where Matt Walsh and Bruce Springsteen called in.
The one guy definitely said "Jefferson Starship" on the first bowling alley call.

I've got a few good ones for the bowling alley. Has anyone confessed to an actual crime yet?

I'm finding the "That's neither here Nora there" and the Bee Gees running gags confoundingly unfunny.
