Pretty sure it has nothing to do with this but who knows anymore.

That was where I first heard of him. That might have been my 2011 song of the year, in one of the last years that I made truly big lists that truly mattered.
I know he had another big hit last year (?) and people made Internet memes out of it but I don't know if I ever actually heard it or not.

People think his Snap Chats are entertaining. I have no opinion on this guy.

"All I care about is money and the city that I'm from" has become my personal motto.
This post tells me both that my previous idea of what a Snap Chat is is a good deal inaccurate and that I most likely became old quite a while ago.

I wanted to start a similar thread about Wiz Khalifa. Admittedly not going on a big sample here but every WK song I've heard has been the absolute worst, and bad in a way that I couldn't imagine appealing to many people.

To be clear I enjoy the work of DJ Khaled, but I saw him in a credit card (or something) commercial the other day which suggested the public was quite a bit more familiar with him than I ever imagined.
A thread where I would ask "Why do people like this artist's terrible songs?" would be about like Flo Rida, 21pilots, or Jason Derulo.

This video going viral probably helped, though it's part of his wider cult of personality, which obviously has more to do with the Snapchats

yeah he crossed over. he does a tiny amount of production/DJ work, but he is mostly known as an organizer and a "celebrity". he has some sort of "inspiration of the day" schtick on Snapchat where he posts videos of him being a rich fat guy and everyone loves it. it's basically an example of a fat guy character becoming a celeb that people like to laugh at. occasionally he also puts out good songs that he likely had very little to do with.

Once Wiz Khalifa started getting mainstream hits he settled on this really terrible, obvious, sing-songy flow that he did on every boring song. But it worked for him. That stupid Paul Walker song from Fast and Furious was a major major hit.
I used to like this Wiz stuff years ago:

Re: Why do people know who DJ Khaled is?
I started following the snapchats quite religiously about...12-18 months ago I think? Every morning I would wake up and follow along with "Chef D what have we got for breakfast", the watering of the lion statue, showers with cocoa butter, rides in the jet ski in the dark, sleeping with mountains of pillows. It was simultaneously quite silly and inspirational. But eventually it became too tiresome and repetitive so I stopped watching. I understand he's now doing grotesque things like livestreaming the birth of his child etc. I've kind of dropped snapchat altogether anyway as instagram has built in more or less the same function.
