My theory at first was that DLR must keep notebooks full of nutty quips for interviews, and that a good portion of the Different Kind of Truth lyrics were culled from those. But really, I think that he just has a really active and creative mind (his podcast is shot in what I assume is his private library, which is full of books on avant-garde art) and that they're just stream-of-conciousness. Old Van Halen lyrics are mostly impressionistic - it's kind of difficult to say than many of their songs are about anything in particular.
Frank Zappa is one of those guys who I've always admired more as an artist than admired his art, but I imagine his working method is similar to Roth's, just pushing out whatever, just because. I bet Dave could have been much more prolific since 1984 - the year and the album - but I imagine he's been constrained by commercial realities.
I wonder if there's some archive of his radio shows. I'd like to hear those now. When it was running, I listened a little bit, but the only thing I really remember is a discussion of In Rainbows, and Dave referring to Tom Yorke as a "fella".
