    Van Halen Empty Van Halen

Post by Ted Falconi Sun Jan 20, 2013 2:37 pm

Interesting interpretation from my lifelong friend, the famous cartoonist John P.:

"Somebody Get Me a Doctor" is the song that made me really consider exploring the Van Halen oeuvre Worried that post-I records would be filled with... filler, I checked out some album tracks on YouTube. Nope, the album tracks rocked too-- Case in point this balls-out rocker about how difficult it is to maneuver through a crowded bar when you have a hard-on in your pants.

While I read this blog post at work the other day, "Runnin' With the Devil" came on the radio. cheers

    Great thread.

So far this morning I listened to 5150 immediately after watching the first half of Wayne's World 2.

I added Play it loud, mutha as the inaugural "ROCKIN" smiley for the new era.

Being in a band with your dad would seem lame, but the only real-life examples I can think of - VH, Spirit - are pretty ufwable.

My own bald dad informed me that the bald dad in Spirit died recently. RPI.

Enjoying that blog link at the moment, also. There was a lot of Van Halen II in the first half of my 2012, as well. When I was interning at Facets Multimedia my supervisor Brian told me that he thought it was "kind of a sophomore slump" and that shit just weirded me out like nothing else. It's not like the first album has "Woman In Love," after all.

Yes, Harvey, IL native Ed Cassidy, aka Cass Strange on the Kapt. Kopter album, RPI.

The very educational "Van Halen Interviews" series explains that they were somehow one million dollars in debt to Warner Bros. and needed to make something new for them to sell. So they recorded II in a hurry and got back on tour asap.
Van Halen also doesn't include "Dance the Night Away", "D.O.A." or any of the other songs on VH II. It also doesn't end with what I've always assumed was DLR squeezing a rubber duckie into a microphone.

Dave sounds a lot like Frank Zappa on some of those Different Kind of Truth tracks.
Just a random thought I had the other day while running/listening.

I never thought of that before, but it's probably accurate to say that the new VH appeals to me for a lot of the same reasons that something like One Size Fits All does.

Both albums feature a guy alternating between singing and basically just talking over exceptionally supercharged rock jams. That seems like it could be a description of a lot of other really good music, though.

My theory at first was that DLR must keep notebooks full of nutty quips for interviews, and that a good portion of the Different Kind of Truth lyrics were culled from those. But really, I think that he just has a really active and creative mind (his podcast is shot in what I assume is his private library, which is full of books on avant-garde art) and that they're just stream-of-conciousness. Old Van Halen lyrics are mostly impressionistic - it's kind of difficult to say than many of their songs are about anything in particular.

Frank Zappa is one of those guys who I've always admired more as an artist than admired his art, but I imagine his working method is similar to Roth's, just pushing out whatever, just because. I bet Dave could have been much more prolific since 1984 - the year and the album - but I imagine he's been constrained by commercial realities.

I wonder if there's some archive of his radio shows. I'd like to hear those now. When it was running, I listened a little bit, but the only thing I really remember is a discussion of In Rainbows, and Dave referring to Tom Yorke as a "fella".

    Van Halen Vanhalen

This chart, while amusing seems somewhat inaccurate.
On "And The Cradle Will Rock...", cradle is used as a noun, not a verb. Although Dave does assure us that the cradle will ROCK!

Wow, these interviews are a real treat.

I'm getting a lot of enjoyment out of observing the social dynamic of Alex, Eddie, and Dave. I wonder if they've ever been a part of a contract that requires the VHs to laugh at Dave's jokes/anecdotes.

I'm sure there's some shit in there about never mentioning Michael Anthony's name, 'cause two interviews in and he hasn't come up yet. I do recall him being Photoshopped out of the album covers on the VH website a while back.

    Man..."Head Heritage":

Zep did it with “D’Yer Make ‘er?” The Stooges did it with “We Will Fall”. Kiss did it with “Beth”. And Van Halen did it with “Ice Cream Man”. That is, they stepped outside their own self-imposed boundaries and brutalised their own metaphor. Of course, Queen did it so often they transcended every genre and got what they deserved/demanded – played Sun City with Ben Elton. But the point here is that the success of the best Van Halen records is all alchemical, that is: they only failed when they stepped outside the metaphor. So long as the songs contained the pre-determined codes – off kilter riffs, unmelodic chromatic strato-guitar solo, showmanic look-at-me vocals, and faultline punishing ur-bass – Van Halen COULD NOT fail. If they had a problem at all, it was just that they had two Shamen in one group and both shamen were showmen. For, as K. Rasmussen long ago asserted in his 1932 book INTELLECTUAL CULTURE OF THE IGLUILIK ESKIMOS:
“Every great shaman must, when asked and when a number of people are present, exercise his art in miraculous fashion in order to astonish the people and convince them of the sacred and inexplicable powers of the shaman.”
I ask you if it’s just me, or was the brevity of the first four Van Halen LPs (about 16 minutes per side) for some deeper shamanic reason? Were they displays rather than entertainments, in the same manner that the Jesus & Mary Chain’s early ‘shows’ were really displays, thereby setting them beyond judgement by being only 15 minutes in length. Did [Warners in-house producer] Ted Templeman get to produce them because he was their Mr Bollocks, or was it because his name stated that he was a temple-man? I mean, this sucker weren’t no rawk guy, he’d even done Beefheart’s soul LP CLEAR SPOT. And did Ted get credited as ‘Tad’ Templeman on the label of FAIR WARNING because of some band in-joke that his production technique was (perhaps in some very ancient Keltic manner) turning him into the tad, or father, of the group?

Typically, like the traditionalists they obviously were, the bootleggers spent all their money on a good-looking record label and left us with your typical Hallmark of Quality photo-copy outer sleeve
I ask these questions because reading David Lee Roth’s autobiography CRAZY FROM THE HEAT back in 1999CE surprised me at the sheer depth of mystical understanding that he had brought to a supposedly intuitive rock muse. He wrote about getting down on his hands and knees and scrubbing every arena stage before a show, just so he’d have a direct relationship with the wood on which he danced.

Now what we need is a whole bunch of poorly recorded concerts from the WOMEN & CHILDREN FIRST and FAIR WARNING period, preferably with vocals way loud and guitar to the Moon. Dammit, we need a Rallizes Denudes-style 10CD box with 23 versions of “On Fire” and an Arc-ified multimelded 25-minute “Eruption”.
