I've probably heard this song more than any other song of the 21st century.
This afternoon, I finally realized that the little vocal parts in the beginning of the song (best heard from 0:22 to 0:50 in this video) is not Damon singing "ooh ooh" or something like that, he's actually singing "feel good."
Go to the end of the De La Soul verse (at just about 2:16) in the above video and you'll hear a voice go "hit it!"
I was unable to enjoy this song completely for several years because throughout the mid 2000s, there was a series of commercials for Dodge trucks that used something like that as part of a macho jingle that they would always use as an exclamation point of sorts at the end of the ad. In this video, you will hear it at the very beginning and near the very end. I am almost positive that these ads predated the release of Demon Days in 2005.
I don't think I was able to completely enjoy this song until that ad campaign finally disappeared from television and I never had to hear it again.
Was the "hit it!" in this song from one of the members of De La Soul and then treated with effects? Or was it simply grabbed from the same sample pack (?) that the composers of the Dodge Truck jingle were working with?
