I'm not getting fit but this has been bothering me for a while now and I figured someone here can help.
Every year in school we had to do the "mile run" for the Presidential Physical Fitness Test and that entailed running around the track 4 times. Each time around the track was 400 meters. But 1600 meters = 5249.344 feet and that is not a mile!
I was not in track and field in high school so I never got any experiences with that that might help with my questions.
Elite runners have gone down in history for setting records in the mile run, including the legendary 4-Minute Mile. Were they running 1600 meters or were they running a mile (5280 feet)? I think that they give out medals in the Olympics for who can run the fastest 1600 meters but that is NOT a mile!
