do boys (still) read books? Empty do boys (still) read books?

Was Harry Potter the last book that boys would actually read? Feels like everything that came after was aimed at girls and boys were just abandoned to be raised by Minecraft.

I know some of you are living with these little monsters so please let me know what I've been missing.

My youngest son hates reading and it’s an argument each day to get him to focus on a solid 30 minutes of reading time.

My oldest has always been a good reader. He was drawn to YA fantasy type novels for a while and read my collection of Star Wars comics 5 or 6 times. Then, he got way into Godzilla and was reading those comics and some in-depth books on the creation and evolution of the “Godzilla-verse”.

So, not the most elevated material but is now on The Lord of the Rings. Most parents I talk to say their kids don’t read at all.

Similar to Nick, my son was into some graphic novels or manga when he was under 10 but I believe that was more about collecting than reading. He did read some of the less challenging ones but I’m certain Death Note was never touched. With that said, he does research on a lot of things via YouTube, history, physics, etc. I wish he read more but at least he’s curious about the world and learns about it in other ways.

My son likes comics as well. I think this was because comic-based movies are so popular. I know a bit about the older comics that I could answer questions too.

He has bought a few Dungeons & Dragons novels as well. Also because he saw Stranger Things/Critical Role.

Seems he tends to read books based on other media he sees; movies, games, shows, etc.

My daughters are or were into all the typical romance girl stuff. A lot of kids with terminal diseases only have a brief summer of love-type shit.

Or oddly, these weirdly tragic and depressing novels about women in shitty jobs/life situations. Its a whole subgenre. My wife reads them too, I don't know the name of the genre. There are a few female authors big in the space and churn out this crap once a month. I don't get it- everything they tell me these women go through in the novels seems shitty and awful.

My daughter is 9 and into Percy Jackson. I think some boys a little older than her like those books

She likes murder mysteries and ghost stories lol. Reads at a pretty high level. Most of her friends barely can read at all. It’s not really stressed at her school to be a reader. All they seem to give a fuck about is MATH and math scores.
