reading all the Klinsmann profiles in the American press this week, combined with the ballsy and, in my view, correct move of kicking Landon's broke ass to the curb has me actually excited for the USMNT's World Cup performance.

I expect the US team to put in a very impressive 3 matches that exceeds most fans' expectations and miss out on advancing out of the group on goal difference.

Can't believe this WC is a week away. I like the Klinnsman quote about the teams that handle unpredictability the best will do well. The heat, the travel and possible protests throughout that could disrupt matches will all be major factors. I feel like this competition could have a few surprises in store.

Sorry to keep mentioning my s/o in every thread, but I'm flying into Berlin the day of the England/Italy game and we're watching it kick off the moment I have my birthday. This will be heated.

Today is a logistical nightmare. I'm watching the four games with four different groups of people. I've stupidly agreed to watch the England game with a bunch of Anglo-Italian coke heads in St Johns Wood. Booked a taxi from there for straight after the match so I can escape to the relative serenity/civility of a Japanese gathering.

The only certainty is that I'm going to be a mess by 4am.

12 straight hours of football, build-up or post game analysis starts in 20 mins.

After wasting way too much time on the NBA playoffs for the last couple months, I feel fortunate that I'm not into futbol. Enjoying you guys' enthusiasm, though.

I wish this wasn't happening for another few weeks.

The Colombian fans were incredible today. That was a great WC atmosphere. Not that excited about Uruguay & Costa Rica but today was always about England vs Italy.

Still going.

Pepe is a motherfucker and I can't tell whether or not I care about the USMNT.

Just because they may not be a contender to win the tournament much less get out of their group doesn't mean you shouldn't care.

The Costa Rican fans sure cared. Same with the Australians and neither of those countries are expected to do much. This American attitude of "Well, they suck so I don't think I care about my home country" is annoying.

I just think Americans are stupid and the only thing we do well is self-depricating comedy. I get super happy when I see a bunch of Costa Ricans, basking in pura vida, celebrating a well-deserved victory. But when a bunch of post-graduate white dudes start waving flags around and being hyper-patriotic about a soccer team nobody cares about to begin with, it's a bit awkward.

I'm going to watch the game and I do hope they advance out of the group but I'm rooting for Italy.

outside of the US, this netherlands team looks mighty fun to cheer for, and i'm usually all for any of the traditional powerhouses (& former winning nations) to get their asses kicked.

As the game progressed I started actively rooting for Ghana. Fuck the USA.

Oh fuck you WP you little cunt. There have been like 4 great moments in US World Cup history & a win against a shitty African team ranks up there so if you can't support that move to Canada.

No American can actually reconcile being patriotic about this team because the people who actually personify the real, reactionary, ignorant American spirit all think your DNA-structure is fucked up because you like watching grown ass men kick a ball around a field. It is only fun because this is the only time that Americans are really underdogs in anything basically ever.

Basically you can't root for them because geo-politics, dude, duh….
