Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.

Fantastic piece of footage. Amazing to think how much has changed and yet so little - Embankment in particular looks much the same when you walk down it now.
Can't say I like London as a city much these days - too many people in a hurry, a lot of rudeness and selfishness, a lot of areas that have lost all identity. I enjoy spending time there traversing the backwaters and hidden places to drink and hang, but I no longer have the least desire to live there. A miserable place a lot of the time.

Re: London -1927
Nope. From Yorkshire though and the people are a lot nicer and friendlier. The only thing London has is that there is so much going on in terms of nightlife. Other than that, I've lived in Barcelona and Sydney and London doesn't hold a candle to either of those as far as big cities go. Better weather, nicer people, better atmosphere, more relaxed, amazing food, far less full of their own self importance, no being stuck on dirty underground trains with a carriage full of miserable, unsociable people. Less crime. In Barcelona's case the arts scene and architecture beats London as well.
Newcastle is a good example of a city in the north that is a lot nicer to exist in than London.

of the hundreds of cities that I've visited across the globe (and the half dozen that I've lived in across four continents) I wouldn't choose any over London

One side of my family lives there, a few miles out anyway. I have been back for a couple of weeks because of a death in the family and to catch up with friends. I live in York, but go to Hull a lot. It isn't bad - despite the poverty most people are friendly, there are some decent bars.
the idea that one place has 'nicer people' than an other tells me you are very young
The fact that you would write that sentence tells me you are an aging patronizing fuck. You can pick up an atmosphere of a place - and in London the atmosphere is of a lot of miserable people, self important people, rushing around, barging past you to get on a tube when another one arrives sixty seconds later. In Newcastle people on the whole talk to each other in shops, people greet you with a friendly smile, people are treated with more courtesy and respect. In London on the whole it is different. There are exceptions but that is the general vibe of the place, central London at least.
People in Sydney, especially in the beach suburbs where I lived, are warm and talkative. Same in Barcelona - there is a relaxed mood, people who serve you in restaurants and bars actually seem pleasant.
I'm far from alone in this opinion - so it isn't 'age' as you put it. It is a fairly true generalization that the further north you get the more friendly people become.
As a percentage there are more greedy, rude, miserable, self centered people in London - maybe just because it is a big city, maybe because they are under pressure, maybe because it is a place for opportunity so it attracts opportunists. I prefer my places to be relaxed and friendly (like myself), and that is not the vibe I get from London. As I say, I enjoy going there and staying with friends and hanging out, there are many interesting people and the nightlife is excellent. I just would hate to live or work there because of the general atmosphere.

Re: London -1927
Hull dude, Hull.
Well exactly, you are kind of proving my point here. You live in a big and wonderful and creative city because you are a big and wonderful and creative person, and everywhere else is provincial and unworthy. Your attitude is pretty similar at a lot of, say, New Yorkers attitudes towards the southern states. What they don't realise is those very 'backwards' and 'redneck' towns and city have twice the heart, soul and warmth than London or NYC could possess.
You are typical of the self important and arrogant Londoner.
My guess is that you haven't been to Hull at all. What don't you like about it? The things that you read in some snotty broadsheet? If you did a survey you'd find that most residents of Hull, Halifax, Newcastle, Manchester, Middlesborough etc were happier than those in London.
If you can write off and laugh at cities at the drop of a hat you don't know much about the world at all, whatever it says in the 'Age' column next to your posts.
