    I haven’t! That’s a good idea. Maybe I’ll check em out sometime.

We have an elite music dead thread and we have a dead thread for folks we thought were long dead at the time they passed away, but since we don’t have a dead thread for national treasures who pass away and its so sad and can’t stop crying, I’ll just throw it out here: RPI Carl Weathers.

I’m not doing so well in the mental health department but I am so thankful for this truly fucked up media project for so often pulling me back from the ledge.

Whenever it feels like all is lost, I can always hit up clickhole for proof that, yes, all is most definitely lost, but also, beauty exists in the world. The utter stupidity of everything, and the jubilant pleasure that this provides, makes everything worthwhile.

Does anyone here own any really high quality or aesthetically-pleasing maps that they display on a wall?

I thought there would be a market for this but there's like nothing for sale beyond Rand McNally/National Geographic bullshit for sale out there. Like I don't want any roads in this thing and if you have boundaries and labels listed then they, idk, better not look like shit, maybe?

Ultimately no map isn't going to be distorted unless it's printed on a 3-D material so your quest to find truth in a well-detailed map somehow still brings you further from the geographic truths you seek

In middle school and high school we had a seven-foot high map of the county or of the school district itself hanging up in the school library ad it was super detailed and I think just staring at it while I was sharpening a pencil up on the wall-mounted, hand-cranked pencil sharpener on the wall that you had to turn the handle around in a circle if you wanted to sharpen your pencil, over the course of six years slowly helped instill a perspective of distance between different places that I'd traveled in the general, and my mind's returns to the ghosts of my memories. Now that's what I'm talking about.

Maps always being “technically” wrong is to me not caring about geography what people always being idiots is to me not caring about everything.

Yesterday I ordered what's supposed to be a really informative book about the history of Israel, now let's see if I actually read it. Oh shit I might actually have time to do that tomorrow if I actually take care of business and not just got on the computer for once!

The wine world has a bunch of great, frameable & detailed maps. I got a couple up in my wine shop. But they - obv - focus on wine regions. Prob not what you're looking for, but maybe the maps you ARE looking for are hiding in the recesses of some other profession, and not generally advertised to plebes.

Has anyone in here actually read Karl Marx?

    Like, the actual Communist Manifesto?

Is that the preferred/ideal/"best" way to get a solid grasp on what socialism truly is?

I believe in the theory of evolution but I tried reading On the Origin of Species and that was a huge drag. Some of that's on me, I'll own up to that, but if you've ever tried to read that book then you'd know what I'm talking about about here. And yeah, that has nothing to do with Marx but I'm eager to avoid that kind of experience again if I can.

Would like to stop being merely sympathetic to socialism and and suspicious of capitalism and actually have a meaningful understanding instead of just a bunch of vague attitudes or whatever is happening in my brain these days.

I am actually reading this book, fwiw, and it's super illuminating and gets into a lot of history I just knew nothing at all about.

It starts at the end of WWI and that's kind of where the Ottoman Empire reaches its end so I think a more complete history of Palestine requires a better understanding of that whole scene I also know nothing about.

Yeah, at some point. Obviously not life-changing for me. Friend of mine who got into communism and is now a children's librarian wrote a parody of it called My First Manifesto when he was 19. There was a Laura Engels Wilder joke in it.
