Playlist - Mixtape Assistance Empty Playlist - Mixtape Assistance

Post by vIv Thu Apr 16, 2015 1:18 pm

So I have been tasked with providing the soundtrack to a small little trashy/druggy after-hours party in Las Vegas next weekend. It's gonna be in a swank suite-penthouse at the Cosmopolitan, and there will be a small collection of spun/ coked out people (some probably on E) hanging out watching the fountains at the Bellagio late night/ early AM. They will have just come from a DJ Set by Steve Aoki at Hakkasan , and I'll want to cleanse everyone's aural palate after all of that house music and get the afterparty started right. I don't really want to DJ per se, so I'm bringing a thumping Bose Bluetooth and plan to make some playlist/ iTunes mixes that I can drop like it's hot and mingle without having to fuss about the music at all.

I have three loose ideas for mixes, and would welcome some suggestions for songs or artists that you guys think might fall into one of the following playlists. In general, I want the tunes to all be good late night thumpy groovers that sound good to spun-out glammo tweakers:

1- Saccharine Longings I picture this as a sort of sensual, trashy, cheesy slick well-produced sex groove vibe. Maybe even some Yacht Rock/ groovy early eighties pop confections, like the soundtrack to Anchorman II. Think the general sleazy creepy sexy feeling throughout Destroyer's Kaputt, and you can maybe sense where I'm trying to go here. Was gonna put "Savage Night at the Opera" from that record on there, Steely Dan's "Babylon Sister," Bryan Ferry "Slave to Love," ABC from "The Lexicon of Love," Prince "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker," Prefab Sprout "When Love Breaks Down,' Maxwell "Ascension."

2- Seduced by Robots Dubby, deep electro seduction. Think good Depeche Mode remixes, Suicide, Fad Gadget, Ultravox, Love and Rockets/ Tone on Tail, Garbage, Cabaret Voltaire, the Knife, David Bowie.

3- Hushed Meteorology Quiet storm- Like Grover Washington Jr, Sade, Jessie Ware, Quadron, Purity Ring, Frankie Beverly, Raphael Saadiiq, Erykah Badu.

Hive mind, activate. You guys have really good ears. Bruegel, Paves, Raj, Undo, Soma, Phixed, nick, Petey, Michael K, Reuben, BG Waves, Zappo et. al I'm looking at you guys.

Also- I'd welcome any links to downloads or streams of really good DJ mixes. Dub, eclectic, ambient, whatever.

Here are a bunch of songs in my "current favorites" playlist that I would want to listen to after a night of raving. Not sure if they all fall into your categories but a lot of them should:

Thanks a million, Phixed. Many of these are right in the wheelhouse. I'll check out the ones I don't know at home tonight.

    That's a great tune, Nick.

And yes, Reuben, it's gonna be a weird scene. Not exactly my people, but I plan to have fun one way or another...

Categories one and two are pretty much this album...you should probably play every song from it at some point:

The second category just makes me think of Thriller and Prince, mainly the Controversy album.

The Marvin Gaye album Midnight Love kind of fulfills all three categories. It's the one with "Sexual Healing." It would be a great idea to play this album in its entirety at some point. Possibly multiple times. Possibly instead of anything else. IMO.

I'm just starting to get deep into the Bee Gees catalog but I know most of the hits and they're top notch.

Their compilation - Who's Landing In My Hangar? - is very good and all you need. About an hour and 10 minutes of solid post punk.

This album is from 1980 and is some new wavey yacht rock type shit with a lot of synths.  The vocal tracks kind of sound like Roxy Music.

The guy was in Todd Rundgren's band Utopia, and used to work for MOOG and then ARP.  He has an earlier instrumental album called Cosmic Furnace that's basically an ARP demonstration record that might appeal to people who get down with Harold Grosskopf and other German crap.  Been pretty into these albums lately.

As usual, Paves gets an A+ on this assignment- those shared files you sent are the true
    mang

Seriously, thanks so much for putting those together.  You are obviously one of the solidest of bros. And you clearly get exactly what I was aiming for here.  Especially digging the deep Style Council tracks, Kashif, Steve Arrington, the Miles Davis, the Dopplereffekt.  I'll have to sprinkle these liberally throughout the Quiet Storm and the white funkcheese Vol. II effort.

For what it's worth, Vol. 1 is finished and I'm pretty well pleased with it.  Lots of thump and strum, eminently nostalgic 80's refraction groovealiciousness.

    Saccharine Longing

    New Order- "Love Vigilantes"
Destroyer- "Savage Night at the Opera"
    Twin Shadow-  "I Can't Wait"
A Flock of Seagulls- "Space Age Love Song"
    Toro Y Moi- "Say that"
Heaven 17- "Let me Go" (2006 Remaster)
    Bryan Ferry- "Slave to Love"
Prefab Sprout- "When Love Breaks Down"
The Blue Nile- "Tinseltown in the Rain"
Simple Minds- "Someone, Somewhere in Summertime"
    Destroyer- "Kaputt"
    Steely Dan- "Babylon Sisters"
    Anita Baker- "Sweet Love"

The Anita Baker felt like a stretch at first, but I think it works.  The album's sound is right in the discursive universe of all of those bands.  Also, after so much cheesy, bittersweet longing, it's nice to have some straight-up sweet love.
