Re: Now Playing
Sleater-Kinney pretty much sucks. But yeah, in theory I have no problem with people having a varied and eclectic taste in music. It is kind of annoying to actually label yourself as such though because you end up listening to shit that libraries across America have cataloged in their 'world music' section. That's pretty fucking stupid and annoying.

Sleater Kinney was pretty good!
Listening to this classic tonight as I continue to traverse the complexities of eigenvectors for principal component analysis and hat matrices for discovering the best least unbiased estimators of y;
Alice is still such a fantastic track, a perfect light at the end of a dark dank tunnel.

Re: Now Playing
This is going to sound weird to most people here but I've never really listened to Prince before and don't know where to start with his music.
I did listen to his very first album some time ago but it didn't do much for me. And no one seems to have much good to say about his 21st century releases.
I definitely like a lot of his music but I get the impression that I gotta listen to him as an albums artist and that hasn't happened yet.

Re: Now Playing
I don't think you need to hear Prince as an album artist. Even in his prime, when most albums were brief compared to today, he was never a great self-editor. There are (unsurprisingly) plenty of great non-singles* scattered across his discography, but I don't think it's bad to focus on the hits when there are so many of them, and when "hits" are clearly his best work, unless you're some kind of Modern Drummer-reading contrarian.

Just realized that isn't the original studio version of S&C, but it's fundamentally the same song.

Re: Now Playing
The obvious starting point would be Purple Rain the film and LP.
There's something rewarding on every album he has ever done except for maybe Rave, though.
His 80's output is pretty much untouchable and he had a nice resergence in the 90's with Gold Experience and Come. 3121 is also a favorite of mine.

Purple Rain and Dirty Mind are flawless. I listen to Sign O Times and 1999 occasionally but those albums are each over an hour long and Prince doesn't do hour long albums well.

Prince is probably the only artist in history with 2 flawless double albums.
Those of course being 1999 and Sign O The Times.

Yeah, 1999 is the best. Lady Cab Driver and 'all the critics love you in New York' are two of my fav songs.

Think this came up on Members-Only Ninja Turtles Fan Forum I a few years ago and I ended up playing Dirty Mind and Purple Rain about a billion times.

Re: Now Playing
What do you think of the 'Love Symbol' album?
The one with "My Name is Prince" and "Sexy MF". I really liked it when it came out.
I bought or at least heard everything as they came out up to then, but then he started putting out a bunch of half baked demo collections and I lost track.

Re: Now Playing
Love Symbol is ok, but is certainly not a top tier Prince release. I am a pretty big fan of Blue Light though.
90's Prince worth checking out would be The Gold Experience (one of his best albums period) and Come.

I would echo the Dirty Mind recommendation. I can never make it all the way through Sign 'O' the Times, a lot of the highs aren't even as enjoyable to me.
