As an aside, they mentioned this was for "some rapper" named Polo G and that the piano was only in the music video for a few seconds or so and that it had been painted it bright red. I have watched every Polo G music video I can find and I have not been able to spot it. Please help me find it!

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
A few months ago, someone I knew sold their piano on Craigslist. They said it was bought by someone who needed it as a prop for a music video they were shooting.

I saw these guys live back in the day. I loved the vibe and they were on the same bill as the Beastie Boys and both bands were similar, but different. Outstanding Concert.

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
dj muggs' career, especially in the last 5-6 years, has been pretty rad. it's full of full-length collaborative records and the best (in my opinion) are:
meyhem lauren - gems from the equinox
eto - hell's roof
mach-hommy - tuez-les tous

I can't stand most contemporary rap but Migos are so fucking cool. This single is literally undeniable. That opening Quavo verse is too much.

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
Carti is someone who I've always thought had more weird, interesting ideas than quality music. Whole Lotta Red coming out didn't make me think differently. I like the vibe he was going for, but it was annoying and messy. This performance above has me reconsidering.
There's something interesting to me about basically being a vibe coordinator of your own show. Every vocal track for his songs is turned all the way up for every song. His songs are just playing the whole time. Anything he says into the mic is a bonus. The stage/visual direction is really strong. The guitar interludes (which are not on the album) are very well done and help link everything together. It's interesting to watch an artist whose "team" has it way more together than they do. By all accounts Carti is an eccentric maniac, but all the people around him are collaborating to create something interesting. His personality is complete essential to the genesis of the music, but it's not important in terms of performing it. Could be any dude in a mask out there.
It's still an abrasive performance, yet one I really enjoy. The simple and beautiful productions shine through. I really enjoy what contemporary punk/rock/rap hybrid bullshit has become (not that Linkin Park x Jay Z crap) and with more focus, Carti could be the king of it. More than anything, I enjoy the melodic repetition on display here. It soothes me even though it's a dude screaming about fucking hoes.
I cut the fat from the album and made a playlist of it:

Maxo has been on a nice steady rise for years. Dude has a cool voice. I think he's solid, but doesn't grab me too much. I used to listen to this song a lot:
What 2-3 tracks do you recommend there?

Since I made this post, Carti has been my #1 listen and I saw his hourlong set at Audiotistic outside SF last weekend. Such a great time! Bay Area crowds are very chill, so nothing wild.
I have lots of thoughts about Playboi Carti the artist, but I don't think anyone cares. You can ask me if you do.
I like to occasionally bump this rap thread with some of the rap I'm listening to because rap is great.
There was a new Young Nudy album this year and Chris Crack is always great.

This list is hard. Very few publications that aren't the big corporate rap outlets write about street rap. This list is deep and diverse (there's a fucking Acito track on there!). Lots to like.

Been enjoying various Freddie Gibb tracks, awaiting any new release. Wicked flow
Also, revisiting MIA and digging a lot of her stuff again, it’s great
Not huge on rap so maybe my taste is pedestrian, idk

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
Couldn’t find the 90s rap thread so I’ll post this here.
Even though Mos Def - Black On Both Sides is an undeniable classic, after listening to the vinyl, I think this thing has a weird sequence. The album tracks are basically split up into 3 categories in my eyes, the straight 90s backpacker songs (typically with guest), the more experimental but still rap songs, and the psychedelic jazzy/rnb songs. For example, stuff like Hip Hop, Do It Now, Know That, and Mr Nigga should be paired together for there similar sound/vibe. Whereas, Love, Got, Water, and Brooklyn share a similar, experimental leaning, DNA. This is 90s backpacker shit but with an eye towards what Kanye, Common, and others would start experimenting with, filters, effected vocals, wider subject matter, etc. Finally, songs like Rock N Roll, Climb, Umi Says, and May-December fully throw out the ‘rap’ playbook and feature singing, spoken word, mushroom beats, over traditional bars/beats. Still one of the best albums of all time but I think a different sequence would bring the whole together a little better. I didn’t feel this way when it came out but it’s hard to deny it at this age. I could probably write more but I wanna know what you guys think?

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
I don't know but this post inspired me to re-listen. I absolutely love this album. It is probably the hip-hop release that has stuck with me the longest and that I consistently always want to revisit. Really miss hip-hop that sounded like this, tbh. Although I wasn't even old enough to appreciate it at the time (7 years old when this one released actually).

The new Saba is unbelievably good. Probably the most complete rap album that I've heard in a long time.

Re: Rap Songs of Interest
I've completely stopped paying attention to this genre for almost a decade. The last phase that really interested me was very early Chicago Drill music. I still listen to Keef's first mixtape. The production and energy on that record still holds up.
I was watching some Andrew Callaghan content recently. It made me realize how completely disconnected I have become from rap music and, by extension, underground youth culture. That is a dumb way to be. So I am trying to correct that. As I have been working this past week, I have been listening to old No Jumper episodes and trying to retrace the evolution of the genre's most innovative artists. Been listening to a lot of Lil Peep, Playboi Carti, XXXTENTACION, etc. Obviously none of this stuff really "connects" with me. But that's fine. I am not the target audience. Sonically, some of it is kind of interesting. Mostly I am just trying to understand the culture.
On the off chance that some of you guys have some recommendations, send em.
