Oh I mean, I'm sure Bermondsey's fine and has some cool stuff, just never occurred to me that a visitor to these shores would make South East London a priority. Enjoy your trip!

We went downtown a bit today to go to the Tate but we’ve mostly been around east/southeast, yeah. may go to British Museum tomorrow to break a chunk off the Rosetta Stone as a souvenir for my brother, then off to Amsterdam.

if you get a chance, we enjoyed taking the train west out of Amsterdam to Haarlem, walking down into the old town area (just head south and go towards the massive cathedral, you can't miss it). Then the Jopenkerk Haarlem brewery was a nice spot to hang out in for a bit.
we also biked south along the amstel down to Ouderkerk, it's a pretty easy trip with a handful of very minor windmills along the way.
i'm sure you've gotten the other usual recommendations - rijksmuseum, van gogh museum, vondelpark, anne frank, etc
make sure you have a chance to sit on the picnic tables at Browerij't TJ enjoying a beer.

Re: vacation plans
Anyone have experience traveling through Italy on their own and recommendations on the best way to go about this?
I realize that’s an extremely broad question but we’re looking to spend the bulk of the time in Florence & Venice. Not much into tourist shit and more into wandering the cities/region at a leisurely pace.
Is renting a car a good idea? I’m also not a hostel type of person and am fine paying slightly more for lodging accommodations.

Florence & Venice were my Italy locations when I visited. Most of Venice is tourism including San Marco, Burano, and Murano. Like, its beautiful but also basically an Epcot center. You can totally just wander around but so will be everyone else.
Florence I would say is totally walkable and if you aren't squished around the main attractions like the Duomo or Pitti Palazzo you'll enjoy it. Even the main areas aren't intolerable though and watching the sunset on the Arno is pretty sick.

Re: vacation plans
Trenitalia is really inexpensive, comfortable, and a great way to travel throughout the peninsula. I can't imagine a ticket from Florence to Venice being more than about €40 and it is the ideal way to travel into Venice anyway since cars obviously cannot make their way into the city itself. As for not being into touristy shit, its literally inescapable in those two cities. The tourism market has completely saturated both cities. Keep in mind that Venice has only 160,000 actual residents and Florence has hardly over 350,000.
Just enjoy the touristy shit and have fun basically!

There's plenty of non-touristy shit in Florence once you get like half a mile from the river. Really pretty rural-esq areas.

Re: vacation plans
All good info. I think we’d be looking to venture into the countryside after getting to Florence. The train seems like the best option getting from the cities.
The beginning, researching portion of a trip is super exciting to me.

Umbria the region near Tuscany is amazing and I’d recommend that area if you choose to drive. It would be especially great with a sports car... It’s farther south than you seem to be going but if you like Wine, even a little bit, you must visit that region. Also it wouldn’t be a BG post without... Visit San Lorenzo in Rome for drugs!

Re: vacation plans
Just got back from NC. Asheville is changing very quickly. If you like the artist communities that make that place cool you may wanna visit in the next few years. Wicked Weed continues to be amazing.... Cool Cucumber, right? Had an almost fist fight with a homeless guy who insisted on helping us park. When I told him I didn’t have any money to give he got mad and was like, “what are you doing in this town without any money.” I turned to look at him and said, “hey buddy, what are you doing in this part of town without any money?” He walked away muttering something about me calling the police. I yelled, “we should call an ambulance instead!” I saw him eating pizza later and we nodded at each other.
