Post by undo Thu Jun 20, 2013 6:08 pm

What do I need to know about this? Where do I even start?

I've waited more than a week for shit to die down before trying to figure this out but everyone is still freaking out over it and neither the government nor the media seem to be trying to paint an honest or simple picture of what's going on or what it means.

If you can tell me my disappointment over all this is totally mislead and unwarranted I'd really appreciate it.

The main thing I don't understand is how any of this is earth-shattering news. I haven't heard Snowden reveal anything that I (and presumably many people) didn't already assume was happening since the Patriot Act, if not earlier.

let me tell you, I'm gonna be pissed if this turns out to be a bunch of focus-grouped bullshit just to smear the president.

The total lack of outrage is depressing. The government is spying on us. They have spent billions to create a system that collects as much data as possible to be stored away "just in case".

This is the exact opposite of what Obama was supposed to represent and the way our government and some media is attacking Snowden is shameful. He is an American hero.

But don't worry, I'm sure all of this data mining could never be abused or fall into the hands of someone or some entity that would violate all privacy rights we are promised.

this "scandal" was a work of genius by whoever rolled it out to the media like this. Obama's opponents are fired up, his supporters are disillusioned, it confirms people's best beliefs about themselves and their worst beliefs about the government.

you can roll back women's rights, ship American jobs overseas, double student loan rates... young people will put up with anything from the powers that be until you can finally convince them that their freedom to use the Internet is in danger. then OH SHIT now the government has finally crossed the line!

I'm so goddamn sick of looking at this guy's face. And reading headlines like this.

I haven't seen so many people trying so hard to show how "patriotic" they are or how much they care about our "freedom" since... 2001.

I mean, this isn't a small deal or anything, we definitely should question this kind of surveillance by the government and corporations. But there's no reason to tie it to other liberal policies nor excuse it because we like who the president is. It's not about right vs. left, obviously, congress knew all about this, and it's not about "big government" either.

The struggle is to keep the pressure on this while maintaining that government is a good and oftentimes necessary presence in our lives as Americans. They just need to stop fucking watching us.

why is it always how the younger generation doesn't care enough to fix societies problems with you?

it's not young people that are driving this socially restrictive free market right wing nutjob agenda, it's shitty boomers and it always will be

I'm saying that young people should know better than to get worked up and strung along by the media machine that the Boomers still control.

Boomers distrusted Obama from the start and make up a disproportionately large percentage of the citizens in this country that literally hate him. The ones who've had the most to lose from any impending social change have done more than anyone to fuck up the system, and even those without any money or power are so brainwashed that they're all lost cause at this point. I've always hated it when people say things to the effect of "they can't die off fast enough!" but maybe it's true.

The Boomers have caused the "Younger Generation" to basically lose a decade and be placed in a scary situation where the future is fucking bleak. Add this NSA information into the mix and you still have a total lack of willingness from people to do anything to cause change.

It's funny because people are so protective of the internet and their privacy using it. But it is the internet that has caused people to be so lazy and apathetic that the government and banks can do whatever they want. They know there are millions of YouTube videos to watch so no one is going to notice their future being stolen away from them.

I am probably going to become the next great revolutionary. Nothing much excites me in life any longer. I'm a captain of industry. I get laid 6-10 times a week and I have heard every musical recording worth hearing.

I basically want to lead this dead ass generation in an uprising that will result in a balanced society where we all thrive and have a realistic shot at a true Future.

The NSA just showed up at my door.  My body was giving off too much positive energy whilst watching the local news.  Must have been the Egyptian protest story followed by a photo of Snowden followed by a clip of a Julian Assange interview.

    you guys following this story:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24399217

my eyes popped out of my head when i read this bit from a new Yorker blog piece:

A man claiming to be Ulbricht’s current roommate, calling himself Jef Costello, was less surprised at first. “Dude was kinda vague about what he did for a living, so this isn’t too surprising, I guess,” he wrote on the Web site Hipinion, in a post titled “My housemate got arrested for hacking,” which has since been relegated to members-only access. When the site’s users mentioned Ulbricht’s name and linked him to the news articles, Costello’s reaction changed. “Fuuuuuccccck,” he wrote. “I have nothing to hide regarding all this, but I am still extremely shaken/anxious.

My friends used to order drugs off the silk road all the time. Four of them went in for a 5 ounce purchase of marijuana once. I think we smoked like half of that purchase throughout the summer.

My girlfriend doesn't do drugs but was obsessed with looking at that site for some reason (using Torr, of course, at least until recently) and was pretty distraught by the whole thing.

also reading that thread tonight, too.
