I hate when fabricated bullshit goes viral.

    Thought Dump - Page 12 Screen10

I've seen this shared all over the damn internet, and I haven't for the life of me been able to find any evidence that she was texting while driving. In fact, a number of news articles seem to suggest otherwise, with photographic evidence that suggests she was not.

So many problems with sharing this kind of stuff...   not least of all, it's the "I'm not anti-trans, but..." smearing of a prominent trans celebrity in the public eye, and you just know the sort of people out there who are looking for every opportunity to do this while (hardly) being able to maintain credibility as not transphobic.

For the record, Caitlyn Jenner can fuck right off. She's trash for supporting donald trump. I just hate when stuff like this goes viral. It's dangerous and unethical. And it reminds me of that "Jane Fonda murdered POWs" email chain that everybody's conservative uncle forwards on Thanksgiving.

I was worried you were making an earnest post to defend Caitlyn Jenner. What do you think of the Ricky Gervais joke from the Golden Globes? Skip to the 1:50 mark for it:

Many would say that the most important, maybe even only important, criterion for a joke is whether or not you laughed (and was therefore funny). On that count, I must admit, I did give a chuckle. Good stuff, good delivery. After that initial response, my first thought was "ugh, we have to keep making 'women drivers' into a thing, don't we?" Tired stereotype, seemingly never dies... fuck this shit, right? But the more I think about the levels to the joke, the better it is. Jenner, biologically male, identifying as female, transitioning to female... people are all just the fucking same in the grand scheme of things, and throwing Caitlyn Jenner under the ridiculous and inaccurate "well, that's what happens when a woman drives!" bus is just delightful in the way it discredits the kind of attitude that would legitimately, and not for the purposes of comedy zingers, place any stock into biological sex being something of primary importance.

Be My Baby is easily the greatest song ever recorded. I know this is not some new, hot take, but I just listened to it and felt the need to post the thought in a community of friends who have been there before.

I still think that "Then He Kissed Me" (now playing!) is slightly better, as I think you know, but I can't make a case for the top three being anything but some configuration of that, "Be My Baby," and "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)." It just can't be done.

Happy Juneteenth everybody. I posted this on social media so all the republican uncles, undereducated military vets, and goodhearted idiots in my social circle would read it:

ned braden irl wrote:I am one of the countless white dudes out there in white dude land who have been conflicted by the idea of reparations. The sheer logistic difficulty of extending reparations, monetary or otherwise, to an entire race of people who have been the victims of human rights crimes perpetrated by our beloved but flawed nation is daunting to say the least. In the past, I've been tempted to side with the Mitch McConnell, "slavery was a long time ago, and none of us currently living are responsible for America's original sin" argument (quote paraphrased). The problem with this argument is that it ignores the objective fact that human rights crimes against black and African Americans have extended far beyond the pre-civil war era and into modern society. This is a long article from a few years back that everybody should really read. Goes into some detail on ways that the U.S. continued to exploit an entire race long after claiming to have "freed" them. Happy Junteenth everybody. We've come a long way as a nation. We have a long way to go still.

x post thread for long articles you've enjoyed reading lately

edit: damn, "republican uncles, undereducated military vets, and goodhearted idiots" is a decent subforum name

To anyone who has spent much time in another country and/or has family from another country, is there any truth to the notion that "elders" and just old people in general are more respected there than they are in the USA?

I guess I'm directing this just to the American boarders here (which is, like, pretty much everyone at this point) although anyone is free to answer.

Do you believe that old people are more respected in other cultures than they are here? There's probably a big difference between how people treat their family members vs. strangers, although I do wonder if there's any correlation in this regard too.

It's become sort of a stereotype that other cultures are much more respectful to the elderly than we are here, and I'm just kind of wondering why that is BUT I don't want to just take it as a given without any proof (i.e. your anecdotes).

That hasn't been my experience. I think the expectation is that Italians would be really reverent to older people and generations, especially since basically all Italian men are huge Mamma's boys, but I haven't really noticed that. In fact, one of the first weeks that I was here I almost got in a fight with this little punk kid on a bus because he was being super rude to a really old lady and refusing to help her get into her seat. It was fucking horrible.

I was raised to be super respectful and reverent to older people by my parents, especially by my Dad, and that is something that I've internalized. But I don't think it is an American thing. That doesn't help answer your question obviously.

It's come to my attention that basically as soon as someone points a camera in my direction I will either stick out my tongue or raise my middle finger (usually both). Does anyone else have this habit? At what age does this stop being appropriate because I could easily see myself being a 40 year old professional person still flicking off cameras. I don't think I can control it.

    https://twitter.com/totonia68/status/1187844716861280256

There is nothing more beautiful in the world than that right there. There have also been people in Chile holding signs saying, "we are the children of the worker's you weren't able to kill." It's a really interesting time right now in the world. There are active anti-austerity movements in Chile, Argentina, Ecuador, Lebanon, Iraq, Algeria, there was a successful political revolution in Sudan, there are democratic separatist movements happening in Hong Kong and Catalonia, there are the ongoing struggles against the neoliberal reforms of Macron's right-wing government in France, and there have been recent protests as well against El-Sisi's military dictatorship in Egypt.

While it's true that all of these movements are responding to specific local concerns (be they the proposal of a tax on WhatsApp usage in Lebanon, public transport increases in Chile, the end of petrol subsides in Ecuador, etc.) they also have a lot of unifying characteristics. I would say that, without exception, all of these movements are challenging the neoliberal precept that democracy should not interfere with the unassailable logic of the market. In many ways, these protests are the mass democratic response to the inability of our governing elites to ever adequately respond to either the economic recession of 2008 or the impending ecological crisis.

Super encouraging signs though. What's especially nice is that even after the governments have suspends their proposed tax increases, the people have continued their campaigns and actually intensified their protests. In all of these instances, the governments' acquiescence only demonstrates and strengthens the collective political power of the masses. All power to the people! <3

And not only are these movements collectively responding to global conditions of extreme economic inequality and injustice, they are also speaking to one another. This is a good example. On the streets of Chile and Lebanon, the people are singing the song of the Italian Partisans during their struggle against Fascism. I love you

I don't understand why so many Americans conflate socialism with a poverty cult. It's the dumbest thing. I was having a conversation with my Aunt who I hadn't spoken to in months and she went on this crazy rant about how Sanders and Warren are revolutionaries who think that capitalism is a bad word but that actually my grandmother has money invested in the stock market that has been getting solid returns in recent months.

Their assumption is that I think anyone who has money invested in the stock market is somehow inherently evil or something. Like, the accusation is that I just really hate the creation of wealth and think anyone who would profit off investments is a greedy, capitalist pig. What puts these ideas in people's head? It is astounding to me that most Americans have the baseline political education of a middle schooler.
