My wife and I have been quarantined for days and should get our test results soon. Looks like we have it.

Thanks! I can't believe what a hassle testing was guys. It took days to get the test, and now it's going to be 4-5 days to get the results.
And they had months to prepare for this spike?

Re: Lysol Slammers
The goal was always to get 80% of the US population over 16 to get vaccinated by the end of this year.
I have to wonder if we're even going to get to 20%. Not because of distribution problems but because tens of millions of people just don't want to get it and no amount of education will quell their fears. They aren't worried because they know they'll be fine if everyone else gets vaccinated.
Rather than feeling like progress was going to be made that would actually effect out lives for the better before next Christmas, I'm starting to think this is going to take years and I will be deep into my 40s before I can go to work or to the grocery store without a mask.

Re: Lysol Slammers
Actually, I would say the primary issue is still a lack of state capacity, which is two-sided. First, the privatization of state functions, which has been a fundamental political project of the bi-partisan neoliberal consensus over the past thirty or forty years, has totally eroded the ability of state governments to actually manage this massive logistical project. There just isn't the technical know-how within state and local governments anymore.undo wrote:The goal was always to get 80% of the US population over 16 to get vaccinated by the end of this year.

But secondarily, and more to your point, I think we are also confronting a really serious ideological problem, which is directly related to the bourgeois American class basically abdicating their class' pedagogical role within American society. Leftists make fun of bourgeois politicians like the Obamas for trying to "lecture" people about their civic responsibilities, but frankly it has always been galling that liberals don't take that ideological project much more seriously in this country. This country desperately requires a republican (small "r") movement that is designed to re-embed its citizenry within the machinery of the state. After all, the fundamental role of political parties is to mediate between the competing interests of the electorate and the state. Since the Democratic Party is obsessed with appearing as a "responsible" party capable of ensuring the smooth operation of the capitalist system (this motivated their response to the financial crisis in the early Obama years), which means maintaining institutional norms from any threat of popular (read also, democratic) subversion, they lack any sort of populist energy to carry out this republican movement. That means that this project falls on the Republican Party, which, well...

Re: Lysol Slammers
My dad got his first shot with the second scheduled in a couple weeks. He was so excited and hopeful.
I think he’s probably like thousands of other people in that I worry he’s never coming out of quarantine. In the past year he’s been terrified, paranoid, untrusting and disappointed in how careless others have been.
To hear him sound optimistic and expressing a feeling of safety is pretty emotional for me. It’s been rough. Rough to the point where even during the summer getting him to let me sit in his backyard, 10 feet apart with my own beer and chair took a lot.
We have a long way to go in terms of “normalcy” but Dad being thrilled about the vaccine gives me lots of strength.

My dad got his first vaccine shot last week and he and my mother are both in great spirits during the pandemic. For that I can be thankful.

Re: Lysol Slammers
People in Illinois are making like 6 hour round trips to get the vaccine. I have a dozen Walgreens within 30 minutes of my house there is no reason to have to require people to do this shit.

Yeah, this shit is insane. My Mom made a five hour round trip for her first dose a couple of weeks ago. I am glad that she did it but also think it is fucking absolutely obscene. They have also made finding an appointment into a part-time job.

I’ll be fully vaxxed in a couple weeks. Looking forward to abiding by the new CDC guidelines of going mask-less and seeing relatives that I’ve not spent time with in a year!

Got that second dose this morning! Hoping 20 hours from now I’m not struggling through the side effects many others have had but I felt fucking terrific strolling out of Walgreens.

My second dose symptoms weren't bad. After the arm soreness from the first shot, I massaged my arm like crazy for a full day after the shot and stayed busy on the second day. I was a bit tired, but nothing serious. Now I'm going to bars and sharing bagged wine.
Congrats Nick and all other vaccine slammers.

Re: Lysol Slammers
I had literally zero symptoms from my second shot, which was nice but it made me wonder if the damn thing is even working. Just got back from a vacation to Denver. Been eating out again although I still prefer the outdoor patios. I was a little concerned that it might take me a while to readjust to normal social activity but it has been effortless. It feels very, very good.

Re: Lysol Slammers
I felt nothing from my second shot, which I got around 11am, up until 10ish pm when I went to sleep that night. Woke up at 12:30am with flu like symptoms, sweating but cold, headache, body weakness. Around 2:30am I woke up feeling so dizzy that I threw up. Woke up again at 4am to try and work my shift but ended up calling off. I didn’t feel better until later in the afternoon, just a warning. On the positive side, I’m one of the only ones out of my friends and family who had that type of reaction so hopefully you don’t have whatever’s going on in my body! Good luck everyone!

I have my first shot booked for tomorrow and someone is telling me I should reschedule it because I have a cold but don't feel ill in any other way? I don't know if that's true, I suppose I'll call the centre in the morning

Re: Lysol Slammers
If you have any COVID symptoms I think it is recommended to postpone your vaccine. If your only symptom is the sniffles, you should be fine. I think they are more concerned about flu-like symptoms. I am not a doctor though. You should just call the centre or your primary care if you are really worried about it.
