Shoutout to Tony Bennett who was 600 so we all knew he was not long for this world but still RPI legend, and also shoutout to Sinéad who was on some other level shit and much cooler than pretty much everybody even and especially those of us who didn't endeavor to love her as much as she was clearly worthy of during her lifetime.

I've had a bad habit of making posts like this any time someone passes away. Maybe I want to rush to be the first one to "report" it, but then not actually saying who it is lets me avoid making it obvious that that's what I'm doing. And/or , by design, this creates a sense of suspense about it, a real thrill to juice the board up. Which is awful!

It also lets me post about artists that I have barely ever listened to or have nothing to say about, without revealing my total ignorance.

I just wanted to fess up to this

Saw that fucker several times while I worked at what was known at the time as the world music theatre, not sure what it’s called these days. He sucked, as expected, but the way he had complete control over the crowd was something special. Also, one of the last years I was there I had been upgraded to security and worked backstage, two doors away from his backstage area. It stunk like the strongest weed I’ve ever smelled and when they walked out it was literally like a cartoon with the huge smoke plume and everyone stumbling out with sunglasses. I go, ‘Hey Jimmy!’ and he just looked in my direction and gave me two thumbs up before walking onstage.

Not the finest Yacht Rock episode, but I did like Michael McDonald’s James Ingram’s description of Buffet’s music. “It’s mellow, but not smooth… kinda shitty.”

It’s universally agreed that A Pirate Looks at 40 is an all time classic tho right? Great tune.
Otherwise BGwaves’ post above pretty much sums up why he was a net positive for the world and why I will miss him being alive.

I've been thinking of that thumbnail all day, and I'm so glad that everytime I load this page I will see "Tropics Obsessed Lunatic" as the descriptor for a fake Jimmy Buffett scarfing down a burger which, tbh, I think is a better avatar for his legacy than anybody else could ever come up with.

One of the all time greats. Saw him at the fireside bowl with Cul De Sac I believe, can’t remember who the backing band was but it was amazing just to be in his presence. They played for like 2 hours stopping maybe 2 or 3 times. Future Days by CAN is one of my personal favorites, a desert island disc.

I remember reading about this show and I was sure that the name of the band started with a G, like it was Galaxy or Galaxian.

But now that I'm looking it up, I see it was Defender and it's obvious why I was thinking about a different arcade game.

I think it's this band. None of their songs are on YouTube.

It was indeed them and the funniest part is my friend Jorge was in that band. We weren’t friends at that time and it’s never come up until Damo passed away. Enjoy this!

I definitely assume, and will continue assuming until the end unless urged otherwise, that Damo Suzuki was nothing but a solid bro from day 1 all the way to the end. Yet at the same time, I also assume he's not shacking up with some relatively unknown Chicago band for several days to rehearse for some small show. Assuming this was a single gig and not part of an entire tour where they were backing them up... or maybe it actually was?  How does a band like this end up with such a gig or earning his trust for such a show? How do you talk to an angel?

Bringing everything back to LOPP, the first thing I saw from searching for Damo Suzuki+Fireside Bowl was a tweet about the show on the Twitter account of... American Football!

This was one of the first songs I heard today.

Looking up some info on the album, I saw that the singer on this track died two weeks ago today.
