Damn guys, Jeff Beck died.
I will miss hearing my dad refer to him as the greatest living guitarist, but look forward to conversations citing him as one of the greatest ever to play.

Re: Dead Thread
I love his era of the yardbirds and some of his solo stuff from the 70s is legit, if you like progressive jazz funk rock instrumentals that is. I will forever remember listening to Surfing with the Alien in the car with my dad. He wore the shit out of that tape. I didn’t even like the music at the time but looking back I think it actually had a huge impact on me.
RIP

Surfing With the Alien is a Joe Satriani record, which is actually a really hilarious way of pointing out that solo guitar music made by guys named Jeff, Joe, or Steve pretty much all does the same thing and is mostly boring. RIP, though, to a guy who got paid a lot to make music I don't listen to.

Re: Dead Thread
This is actually the second time in the past 24 hours I heard Beck, Satriani, and Surfing With the Alien in the same sentence, so I was starting to think these two technical wizards actually collaborated on the album.

Steve Sostak has passed away. I have fond memories of Sweep the Leg Johnny blowing up the Fireside Bowl back in the day. Only 49 years old. Rest in peace.

Trugoy The Dove. The first 3 De La soul albums and Stakes Is High were albums I played a ridiculous amount in early college. Early on in our relationship the love of my life put EYE KNOW on a mixtape she made for me. I listened to that tape on my way home from UIC everyday thinking, she’s so cool. Also, solidified my love for Steely Dan. RIP

Read this piece about Sakamoto and YMO by Simon Reynolds. Worth your time.

Re: Dead Thread
My dad's sole musical passion. A fan since high school. The reason he tried to get into playing guitar back then and also came back to try to pick it up once again in his mid 60s. Probably the only musician to inspire him.
I'd been halfheartedly trying to learn one of his songs but I'm an absolute zombie these days with no gusto or self discipline so my fantasy about suddenly blowing my dad's mind by picking up his guitar "next time" I come over and suddenly playing a Gord song and also not sucking it it is probably not gonna happen, wtf

Digging the guitars in "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" in ways I never quite did before.
Lots of "Life's What You Make It" tone in it
or something

DJ Deeon, it’s terrible that a lot of these house music legends are passing away young. I get the lifestyle is rough but still… RIP.
