Re: First song you heard today
sometimes Jerry is the best and sometimes he's the worst!
maybe i should punch myself in the head for this comparison, but these "jam band dudes" are kinda like the improv and bands that do tight sets the same every time are standup comedians. sometimes Jerry works, sometimes he doesn't. sometimes you're in the mood, sometimes you're not. sometimes he was so strung out on heroin his jams suck, other times he was just the right amount of strung out and the jams are sublime.
undeniably a lovely guitarist though. my boss made fun of me at a bar the other week because i couldn't identify "Truckin'"

It's true, man. I've had that conversation with Paves regarding both Jerry and Zappa. Several times.
The first thing I heard, today, was some skull-fucking Keiji Haino bullshit.

Re: First song you heard today
I'm with Paves on Zappa, all the way down to the exact era (I think) he put it in. Most of what he released from like 1966 to 1972 was fantastic and after that it's all bullshit. I haven't seen Eat the Question but I strongly suspect he comes across as either very articulate and interesting or completely insufferable. Both are strong possibilities, and I feel that they're reflected in different parts of his work.

He comes across as both of those things at the same time, yeah. I'd say that I, too, bitterly--bitterly--hate about 80% of the music that man made. But the other 20% is so perfect that it makes everything okay.

Chrono’s dad sounds exactly like my dad, and I’m down with this discussion for sure. I love pretty much everything on Cruisin with Reuben and the Jets and most of his other stuff in that doo-woppy vein. “Stuff Up the Cracks,” a Paves approved song, my light be my favorite thing.

This song always makes me think of the 90s comedy, The Scout with Albert Brooks and Brenden Fraser.undo wrote:Dionne Warwick - Do You Know the Way to San Jose

I recently watched the video for that song for the first time in like 30 years. It's a doozie!
